its going to be a great start to the month for me...4mbps telkom dsl line going in ...happy days. And this after some shocking "uncapped" product from a local isp down here in plett..i am going stone aged to space age (figuratively speaking of course :)

anyways i now sit having to decide between the axxess or openweb uncapped product. They seem similar although on axxess i can see already i will nail the rolling window in no time on the 384 line/ 4mbs. I like openwebs after hours full speed thing as during the day i know what to expect in terms of speed. OW are more expensive. OW have a good presence here on these forums

...and yes the multi TB HDD is ordered

Both seem to have good and bad threads for service. I have read everything going back to late last year on both companies. On the whole i tend towards OW, but would be great to hear you opinion and what you would do

oh and lastly, i still have a old 4 port marconi router from like 4/5 years back (std telkom issue back in the day)...it currently works fine. It has enough ports for me currently..is there any solid reason to change it? I run 3 pcs and a mac off it at the moments

I am very happy with the OpenWeb Express Uncapped 4mbps. It runs at full speed most of the time, but towards the end of the month you start to see some slow down. Was running around 380 kbps this whole weekend. I signed up with Astraweb the news server, so I can pull about 15 Gigs weeknights and around 80 gigs over the weekend.

Speedtest.net reported my line running about a third above average for IS as the ISP (the openweb product uses IS fibre).

Had no problems with customer service. All questions were answered promptly and they do have a nice forum presence.

You will get different opinions here I can promise you lol. My friend is with openweb and he hasn't had any problems to date. I have a local axxess account which i use every now and then to download some stuff. And no problems with them either. So good luck in chosing lol.

Uncapped axxess 384/4mbit after hours for me. Been using it for just over a month , no problems @ all . The rolling window doesn't bother me since I'm @ work till 6pm and use the 2 hours of limited connection to watch a movie or a couple of eps. DL speed around 410 - 420 local and Int. Closing in on a 100gigs down for the month .

OverALL = Happy Chappy

i moved to Axxess from openweb, now when i phone with a query or account renewl someone answers the call and they reply to my emails, they both sell the same IS packages so there is no difference in speed afterhours, you still get 4mb/s with Axxess, however i get a faster throttled speed on Axxess during office hours.

I WAS also thinking of getting an Axxess/OW account next month till I heard it was IS. I have a WebAfrica 30Gig local IS account and its USELESS! Bearing in mind this is my first month with it tho, but news servers dont work, nor do any int sites (Obviously - although strangely enough they did work for the first day or so  ) What else can you do with it besides "game"?

Anyways my question is, will this "uncapped" acc be the same? No international direct/p2p downloads? Any1 give me/us a breakdown of what you can/cant do on it before I buy into this wallet muncher please? :)

If you want 24/7 support , go for Axxess, Openweb only has limited weekday support.

The Client Control panel is much better for me on Axxess than Openweb.
Both are throttled during business hours and having Rolling day periods.
Here is the cost breakdown:

Axxess uncapped (Satellite) = R899
Axxess uncapped (Fibre) = R999
http://www.axxess.co.za/uncapped.php

Openweb (Satellite) = R999
Openweb (Fibre) = R1090
http://www.openweb.co.za/express_adsl.php

You can conclude that you will save R1200 a year with Axxess and will have the benifit of 24/7 service with them. Obvious choice?

Depends on the product and its "yield", no good having great service and savings if you get nothing from it! :)

OtakuD clearly has no idea of what (s)he is talking about.

Anyways, what does Openweb throttle to that they are R100 more expensive?

They throttle to 256 after you hit the rolling window. As for the the 30 gig local acc vs a uncapped Int account .. obviously they don't offer the same service AND News Servers work just fine thank you :p

yep..after a few mails back and forth with OW the uncapped express account (R 1249) has no limits (other than 255k during 8pm till 8am weekdays)...go wild seems to be the overall undertone. They reckon top users where getting around 700GB pm which is a bit less than axxess claim

A good newsgroup also costs though which adds even more to the cost and this is an essential cost.

tough call...axxess does seem the logical call here

256 is worth a R 100 vs 192

what gets me is the exorbitant telkom cost to have a 4mb line

flip a coin i reckon. unless they charge significantly lower prices, they're pretty much the same. been with axxess for 3 years now. Decent company. Had some issues initially but they've been quite good and I cant complain.

If you consider that the difference between the two is 64kbps, you in theory would be willing to pay R6400pm for an uncapped 4mbps line (4096/64 * R100).
