Bad MTN systems & procedures

My cellphone got stolen at 1am on the 17th of November 2013. It was a Blackberry 8520 which was synchronized with my gmail account. I called the 173 number and I was told MTN can't cancel my sim card because it is on prepaid, that I must wait for 9am and do a sim swap inside an MTN store. The call center agent further told me the blackberry phone can't be blacklisted up until 8am, again, I had to wait.

My phone didn't have a password on it, which meant whoever had my phone could freely access all my accounts until 9am, not to mention use up my airtime. I immediately changed passwords from my laptop on websites such as Twitter, Facebook, etc. I changed all of them but the criminal could still gain access to my gmail account.

My hands were tired, all because of a system MTN uses not to immediately cancel prepaid sim cards. I was afraid the criminal could look into my emails, so I decided to delete all my gmail emails. This was done all because of MTN's bad & procedural systems which don't make sense. I hold MTN responsible my the deletion of all my emails.

Suffice to say, I will definitely port from MTN to another cellphone network.

LOL, why couldn't you change your Gmail password?

EDIT: I doubt anyway that other cell phone providers will "block" a prepaid either, so you will have to research if any of them allow such. The criminal could have inserted any other SIM and used that as well to access your Gmail, since your phone was not password protected, so I don't see how it is MTNs fault. Just saying.

I blame MTN because why do they have a system of only allowing a phone to be blacklisted from 8am until 8pm everyday? Why not 24 hours? Cell C and Vodacom have systems of phones being able to be blocked anytime.

Sorry about the theft: does the phone have the option for a remote reset? On my android, gmail is viewable even when the SIM is locked so resetting is the only thing that would help in those circumstances.

If your google password changes you will have to reenter it on the blackberry as well, it won't automatically log in with the new one. I know this from experience

Even if the Blackberry phone is synchronized with a gmail account? Meaning emails to a gmail account are received on the phone as an sms?

There is an option to log out of all other sessions except the current one, meaning after your Password change...
