Especially seeing as the let India in even at the height of the India delta waves. The UK obviously don't consider SA that valuable a trade partner.

It is a real kick in the teeth in so many ways:
We have the same variant of covid.
They probably have more covid than us (and will go up now with their winter).
Tourism.
Millions of South African / English have family on the other side and visiting is essentially impossible for a working person with the mandatory isolation periods.
A neg covid test and/or vaccine card should be enough (although these can easily be faked).

So here’s the thing.. it’s now what September.. if they wanted to have impact for dec-feb season they needed to lodge this June/July but they were fighting local gov instead. I actually mentioned then that even if SA removed lock down the tourism sector is ****ed for this reason (people generally book in advance given all the new stuff you need too).

So yah.. this was way, way too late to start trying to get this changed. My 2c.
