There should be no guns for private citizens, Minister of Police Bheki Cele said at Arcelor Mittal Steel in Vereeniging on Wednesday, where 30,000 firearms were destroyed.

The weapons were placed in a giant “pot” and smelted, resulting in a hot mess reminiscent of lava. For safety reasons, observers were made to stand well clear of the action.

Cele said most illegal firearms made their way to criminals when they were stolen from homes during robberies.

The firearms destined for the furnace on Wednesday ended up in the hands of the state either through being seized by or voluntarily handed over to the SAPS across the country’s provinces.

Plenty of guns have been stolen from the police.

Anyway, you need a functioning police force, before you can attempt to limit any forms of gun ownership.

If you ban all the guns, everyone is going to bring a knife and learn how to knife fight.

Why do you think everyone in medieval times walked around with swords. It wasn't to look cool for future television purposes I assure you.

What about the guns that the saps either lose or robbed of?

Idiot
Or those sold to criminals by the police themselves.
Or those stolen from the military.
Or those smuggled in from other countries
Or those from arms caches from the struggle years

Criminals break in and steal firearms because the law is soft on criminals and inhibits law abiding civilians from being able to defend themselves without substantial hassle.

Yeah, I wonder how those criminals found out where those legal firearm owners live...

What he is saying is true, they don't have to find where you live, but as others have said, criminals also get guns from the police, military and the private security guards, taking guns from private citizens is not going to help.

The call for banning guns from citizens comes amidst the Expropriation Without Compensation process. The ANC fears resistance and retaliation... and rightfully so.

In addition, the problem with banning guns is that criminals do not need licenses nor do they care about licenses. They are all armed with unlicensed stolen arms, which they will never give up. So, banning guns, the ANC attempts to make a vulnerable citizen even more vulnerable.

In a country with a crime rate similar to that of a war-torn country, banning guns is totally crazy!

Of course, criminals don't have to be certain you have a gun/s before they rob you, or invade your home, but I was actually alluding to the fact that there is a register of legal firearm owners (including their home address?). Criminals have obviously gained access to the register thanks to corruption & that is why so many legal firearms are being stolen...

McBride was a gun smuggler through Mozambique,
The ANC still holds a huge cache of illegal arms in Luthuli House,
Both ANC and Inkatha arms caches are still everywhere in SA,
Political hitmen are armed from caches managed by hostels,
Police steal and sell weapons from SAP13 stores weekly,
Police arm gangsters in the Cape, as many of the high level SAPS officials are on gang payrolls,
The police system of controlling arms through CFR is SO flawed that they refuse to allow hundreds of thousands of sold arms or ones in estates to be transferred to dealers in spite of years of begging,
The recent changes to the IBIS system to lock out late renewals made hundreds of thousands of previously legal people, criminals overnight and created 400,000+ illegal arms, with more every day.

And yet SAPS and idiots like Cele want US to hand in our guns, as WE are the problem??
Seriously?

Get someone in charge who has a clue, you incompetent useless waste of oxygen.
