BREAKING | Government refuses to show minutes of cigarette ban U-turn, says it's ‘classified’

Government has formally indicated that it will oppose a far-reaching court challenge to the lockdown cigarette sales ban – and has also made it clear that it will not hand over minutes of the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) discussions regarding the ban because they are "classified".

The Presidency has confirmed to News24 that cigarette companies are now allowed to manufacture and export tobacco products to other countries – but appear to be adamant that the ban on local sales must remain in place.

"Manufacture and export of cigarettes is already allowed in the regulations and not tailored for any company," Presidency spokesperson Khusela Diko told News24.

With all the people saying the cigarettes and alcohol ban is ridiculous...Well, that has been what was said about voting for the ANC since 24 September 2008!

So is this it, will we never buy legal cigs in this country again?

Nope this is the government making its first major legal misstep in this saga...

If they try play the classified angle in court, the judge will ask for the justification and get the clearance to see the documents in private.. if the justification doesn't match the contents then they're in for a world of pain...

Can't help but think all these lawyers and advocates are screaming into a void here :(

Shame Cyril doesn't want the nation to know that the cigarette ban was not based on any scientific advice. It was just NDZ's hobby horse and enriching herself and her smuggler friends.
I think we are wrong on this. I feel its the entire ANC, funding the party.

According to the sources, ANC Treasurer General Paul Mashatile had taken a trip to Saudi Arabia in December to "seek resources" but was unsuccessful. The ANC was allegedly "bailed out" by President Cyril Ramaphosa who in his personal capacity gave a huge donation.

In other words, there are no minutes, we sucked this **** out of thumbs, we're spiteful AF and to cover our asses and complete ineptitude we will fight this tooth and nail even if it cost the tax payer millions of Rands because that's just how the ****ed up and useless roll.

Can't anyone see the deal struck between government and BATSA.

Cigarette sales still banned but the manufacturing and export is allowed.

We just got shafted by both government and big bussiness.

F$#k government, BATSA and everyone involved in this including CR, NDZ, Rupert and the whole BSTSA board.

Manufacture is expressely allowed in the regulations up to 20% capacity...

I doubt export was ever expressly banned...
