You have a bunch of morality controllers who believe they know what’s good for the people and so impose their prejudices on everyone.

They use the same moral arguments as the US lawmakers of the 1920s did to make the point that society would be a better and healthier place without these products.

It helps, of course, that there is a deadly pandemic at play, but society has seen through their ulterior motives.

The results are also the same.

The underground markets are flourishing. Ganglords have added cigarettes and alcohol to their usual staple of hard drugs.

New players have emerged – mostly law-abiding citizens who have seen a gap and taken it.

Law enforcement members have become a key conduit of underground products as they are the ones with freedom of movement and the cover to transport goods.

The home-made brew revolution has taken off, the harmful results of which we will only know in time.

And South Africans are forking out ridiculous amounts of money for these illicit goods, further damaging the mainstream economy and the fiscus.

a mini zuma, and a young zuma, involved in illegal cigarettes flooding the market during a cigarette ban.

how obvious can it get.

british american tobacco has a somewhat 20 billion rand market share here. wonder to what extent the will go to get it back eventually. i suppose the thousands of trucks not being hijacked is a relief.. since there are no more trucks to hijack will organised crime target storage and manufacturing facilities. things seem to be going that way by stimulating criminal activity in the illegal trade.

ramaphosas government and track record is losing out on over 12bn per year. the man is being bamboozled. ...or is complacent, like he always has been for years now.

I have probably ruined my lungs more by fishing in garbage for stompies, smoking whatever looks like it might contain nicotine, then I would have by just smoking my normal brand. I bet this rings true for most smokers here.
The minister of health has no notion of the incredible addiction of nicotine (as bad as heroin) and what smokers will do to get a fix. Failed on all fronts this ban.

Must say was very close to dumpster diving on Saturday. Saved by a Twisp. found 2 more cartridges for that one as well so ready as a back-up if I run out again. (3rd cartridge is 0 nicotine so dont think that will be on any use)

Will agree that random donkey kaka I am smoking can not be good for me vs my normal brand.

RG, D's, CK are now flooded in Queensburgh. R45 a packet. It usually went for R10 a pack pre-lockdown.

If you're rich, you can get Marlboro/Stuyvesant for R150 a pack of 20's. Beer is R60 a quart of Carling. Moonshine is R5-R10 a 250ml cup, depending on quality.

We must be swimming in the money if the government can afford the lost revenue due to some minor backend deals they get.

I am not a smoker but is till cant understand the concept of not allowed to smoke, it seriously cant be the 2000 people that complained?

JOHANNESBURG – It’s emerged that Adriano Mazzotti is a contributor to Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma's presidential campaign to succeed President Jacob Zuma.
The Sunday Times is reporting that Mazzotti, a controversial cigarette manufacturer, presented Dlamini-Zuma with an array of election paraphernalia, including election caps and shirts.
The startling claims are made in a new book, the President's Keepers by veteran investigative journalist Jacques Pauw.
It's understood in a 2014 affidavit, Mazzotti admitted that his company, Carnilinx, is complicit in fraud, money laundering and tax evasion.
Both he and his company are also said to have contributed cash to Dlamini-Zuma's campaign.
How is she in parliment?

Does Trevor qualify as an 'Elder' that can give the government advice, or just an outsider now?
