Pardon me while I use this space to let off a little rant. I’m losing my mind and this appears to be the only way to let out some steam as I feel compelled to respond after browsing this thread.

Feel free to skip the long read if you please. Lol.

None of this makes sense. I don’t drink. But I’m still a dirty smoker. Granted a box can last me 2 weeks to a month as I only smoke under certain conditions. Conditions which have been occurring more frequently under this asinine lockdown that, day by day looks more like a communist takeover than a “bid to save lives”.

Yes, there Is a global pandemic (though the numbers And science backing the reasons for such extreme concern and action shrink more and more daily) and yes, reasons for a lockdown were a good idea when we went into it. But in 2020 any rational person would think that such a thing would be implemented with the idea of trying to keep the masses as comfortable as possible so as to garner full support and therefore full effectivity from the lockdown. Not this thing of lock them down and take away as many rights and pleasures and dare I say creature comforts and if they don’t obey they’ll pay what are now legal bribes (admission of guilt fines), locked up or for the shits and giggles, beaten to death. And when all this happens what then? Will anyone be held accountable? Nope. They’ll all get off without a second thought and the entire matter dismissed, shoved aside and forgotten in the drowning noise of the next outcry.
  • First it was the booze and the cigarettes.
  • Alongside it was being told you cannot work. You cannot provide for yourself or your family. But don’t worry the state will take care of you.
  • Then it was a curfew. A regulation that said when and where/how far you can go to exercise. Get fresh air. Things needed to keep one reasonably sane. especially under such conditions.
  • Then came the regulating of what food you can by. No need for making sense of how or why hot food is not ok compared to so many other things allowed.
  • Now it’s a regulation on what you can or cannot buy to wear. Yet another way of stripping us of our identities. And taking control away from us and placing it with them.
And on The second point. I did lose my job. And despite being retrenched, having paid UIF for like a decade, consistently without a break. I submitted my docs in accordance with the rules only to be told they cannot help me. That’s all. I can’t take this anywhere they say. And they cannot help me.

Along with all these examples we’ve seen things that have seemed perfectly reasonable and rational. Like regulations on fake news. That’s good. But looked at in the broader sense, it’s also kinda turned into a regulation basically on what you can or cannot say without fear of being reprimanded. This makes many on a sub conscious level rather not speak up when they maybe would’ve when they agree or disagree with an opinion or view that is not “in line with the state”.

This has also in turn bred and birthed many cheerleaders for this behaviour from government. Close minded lost individuals who take solace in a body of corrupt politicians who are doing nothing but using them and couldn’t care any less about who they are.

While I understand this sounds extreme. And the way I paint the few of many regulations and changes that’s have been put in place in probably the most negative light possible. It’s not because I’m so “woke” and think so highly of myself that I have some duty to play the “all Knowing social justice keyboard warrior” to anger the people and create fake, short lived rage simply to garner attention which eventually equates to nothing.

No. In fact I know I know little myself. But there is one thing I do know. And I’d like anyone to point out if I’m wrong on this. One thing I do know, is that nowhere in history, has there ever been time where the events, regulations and changes ever taken place and then not been followed on by something ever more severe. Ever more crushing. Ever more Oppressive. Nowhere in history has there been a time where a government exerted this much brazen disregard, under this much secrecy, and not followed it up with something much, much worse. No country, not one, has had their government behave in such an oppressive and authoritarian manner. Not even what we know of that’s happening North Korea FFS.

Our governments track record, when looked at objectively, shows this to be the standard and the expected. This is a Communist Government. One who’s closest, most influential allies are China and Russia.

And all we ever do is talk loudly into our keyboards and show our outrage. And always “talk” about how it’s time to make change. It’s time to stand up. We’ve all been repeating this since Mbeki (probably our last good president, at least in comparison) was ousted. Blah blah blah. Until the next shallow distraction comes our way then it’s business as usual. But we, and I keep saying we because I know I myself am equally to blame in all I claim, but we aren’t in the same business as our governmental rulers.

It’s time to actually do something. Before a lot more suffer and die than this virus would ever be able to kill. Before we find ourselves in a place where, in accordance with history, is going to be anything but pleasant.

I say all this not knowing where to even start but I know something has to change. I know this is not going in a way that will turn out in any of our best interests. I also know that many feel the same way I do. And they probably feel as lost and clueless as I do too.

But we have to do something.

And there there was 3.

Sold 2 sets of (2 x Juice and a E-cig) to friends
Kept 3 bottles of juice and 1 E-cig for myself. Could not keep it all knowing that other smokers are suffering.

The government might as well ban painkillers and tranquilisers because what they have done with this ban is inhumane and against human rights. I cannot see this s..t flying in the U.S and other western countries. Can you? This government has shown us its true colours under the stress of this pandemic. At least for that, we can be grateful because the s..t has been shown up where before it was hiding in corners.

The only reason this is flying is cause the uneducated masses believe the lie's and think they on paid leave, and those that don't get paid blame the employers as fat lazy rich whites that just want their slaves to come back to work.

Biggest joke is we now have a law against fake covid news yet that **** flies all over the place. Hell those that spread the fake new even get to talk on TV.

There can be no true despair without hope. As long as we keep hoping, we’ll keep getting disappointed again and again…and again. When we lose our hopes, we accept the reality as it is, for better or worse, we just live with it. Sometimes hitting the rock-bottom might turn out to be the best thing for us. You know why we hold ourselves back? Because of fear! Once we have lost everything that holds us back, we can be truly free to do everything that we have ever wanted to do. - Tyler Durden 1999 Fight Club.

Just so long as you're black. Never forget that part.

You know, honestly, this comment is one that I should be able to call you out on as some sort of negative racist BS. But i can't. And that pisses me off. Not because I think you're being racially insensitive or anything (a short look through your comment history proves you aren't). But Because even with the better part of 3 Decades gone by words that should not have a place or apply to reality still do.
Kinda like how being told everyday I must "go back to Europe". Despite having deep familial roots in SA and never having been to Europe.
Its all become very disheartening.

I would love to go to Europe. Big but: I can't afford a car, much less starting over in another country. Employment equity has not been kind.

Now the euphoria wore off, I fear what Little Lenin Patel might do next.

It does not believe it will be possible to meet the objectives of the Disaster Management Act and operate within the designated hours announced by trade and industry minister Ebrahim Patel.

Aha. The devil in the details. Ag f0k.

Firstly, interesting post - I did read it, and I can tell you, you are not alone in how you feel.
I assume you are younger than me.
I wont give you advice, its not place to do so, but I will tell you how I dealt with the issue.

South Africa has chequered history.
Some of us went off to army, for no reason at all, now it seems.

Many of us, are second class citizens today. Reverse racism is real and working hard against us.
I am a victim of that, despite employing on talent over my career, I was denied employment on race.
The rules the government made, and they are getting worse.

The way I dealt with it was to find work off shore.
My lifes savings are determined by an economy that is being mismanaged - what I earn in a month now, is double what I earned back home, in ZAR terms, but worth half as much in my new country.
I own property in SA, I have kids in SA.

Today, I am in a happier place. Sure, I miss family and friends, but there is absolutely no way, I can compare my lifestyle to what it would have been had I chosen to remain in SA.
I can only compare my freedom, even during the pandemic, to like things were when I was much younger.
I think I have a chance to give my kids the choice - remain in Africa or go elsewhere. Their choice, but I can make the possibility exist for them

Darker days are probably looming, although I certainly hope not, and I wish you all the best for the future.

An interesting fact, even during the two world wars the UK didn't attempt to ban alcohol.

Prohibition in the US just increased prices and led to much higher crime levels before being repealed as a failure.

South Africans are not the world’s biggest alcohol consumers
A South African minister claims the country tops the international rankings for alcohol consumption. The most recent data shows he’s wrong.
