We saw how well that worked out for smokes.

There is a point to be made that during this time restaurants will not be doing well whether or not they serve alcohol... It's pretty naive for restaurant owners to think that the lack of alcohol is the main reason there are less customers.
Obviously they should un-ban alcohol with immediate effect, I just feel sorry for the restaurants when they realize it didn't actually make that much of a difference...

EDIT: Unless they serve alcohol "only" at restaurants... then we will see the biggest boom in history.

It's not the only reason but it is the one thats most easily resolved.

Yup, short of a vaccine the virus is not going away soon, that is no reason to totally screw marginal restraunts by banning alcohol.

Any fool can figure it out. When the profit on a single packet of cigarettes, which costs maybe a Rand (if that much) to manufacture, is in the order of R60 to R100 - Let us for a moment imagine how many people who are able to jump on this opportunity, and have the gumption to act in a criminal manner, will jump on that opportunity. Erm... Short answer: ALL OF THEM.

Profits margins are astronomical. Many people who are not currently criminals would have jumped on it too. The positive impact for those involved in the illegal trade, ergo the syndicates and outliers, is in a word - Vast.

What the crooks in government is essentially doing is nurturing the next generation of corrupt politicians. Any time criminal syndicates profit they will always divert some of that wealth to political influence.
Unfettered crime begets more criminality.
