Have change.org or other online petitions ever produced the desired results?
In the real world, only one thing ever brings about real change.
I won't go into that here, but most of you will know what I'm talking about.
The anc had failed the people before any of this went down and they knew they were on their way out.
This is their last grasp at power.

Petitions have had their effect in some cases.

The ~200k signatures on the petition to lift the ban is quite telling in comparison to the 2 signatures on the opposing petition when I checked a few minutes ago.

The ANC is historically not very good with numbers though, so they might not be able to understand the significance of those numbers.

Disclaimer: I signed the petition to lift the ban. I am not a smoker and I think it's a filthy habit, but I said from the beginning that suddenly forcing smokers to go cold turkey while simultaneously locking them inside with their relatives is a recipe for disaster. It'll do far more harm than good.

You're assuming a bunch of power-tripping mobsters having any consideration for a democratic vote.

You sir, have put it much more eloquently than I was capable of doing. Please accept my "like" as a token of my appreciation.

What you say is quite true - the current situation and the ANC's handling of it reveal that their first priority is being in charge. Not about democracy or liberty or even the wellbeing of the country or citizens, but about them being in charge and saying what is allowed and what isn't.

Bad with numbers you say .
Could that be a result of the freedom before education the movement pushed ?

I'm really surprised the big tobacco companies haven't been making more noise... they have destroyed the economies of countries, pretty much owned some countries, and have politicians so deep in their pockets all over the world - yet they can't sort this out?

I'm really struggling to figure out the science behind why active smokers are doing so well with Covid 19, yes they have a more vulnerable target fr the virus, but so far it seems plausible that getting to that vulnerable target involves going through a gunfight for the virus.

If you were a previous smoker and the damage was already done, then the data is more in line with what was initially thought...
Correct me if you think I am wrong. I think smokers in general are not so obese as the non smokers. And obesity is basically the number one reason to end up in hospital with Covid-19 ( high BP, diabetes, heart problems).

“More people [in 2015] died because complications related to diabetes than malaria, tuberculosis and HIV combined,”

Ag the weaklings in this country.
All they do is cry on their stoep and smoke tea leaves.

everyone is waiting for someone to do something but no one wants to be someone that does something.
Actions are more successful if they have an element of surprise. Public forum discussion removes it.

Then one has to wonder who is paying off whom , because they are certainly not making enough noise.

Oh Niehaus has never kept his sycophantic trap shut...... he has and still does support Zuma completely. This is merely him trying to ingratiate himself with the new leadership so he doesn't get booted to the curb.
Well, Zuma will be in court on Wednesday. He has to find a new sponsor to cling to, and fast.
