End of the day, the booze and cigarette ban is not for the people who would frequent a forum like this. If everyone in this country was educated and middle class then there would be no need for either of these bans.
I agree with that. If everyone was reasonable.. think ahead and try to work with the system vs just doing whatever they like. They would then buy goods in advance or work it that they buy enough to last until they have to visit the shops again.

If everyone was sensible and reasonable , there would be no need for the ban.

Unfortunately, that is not the case. Not everyone can afford to buy in that manner either. The problem is that they will go about their ways on a daily manner, chancing it or putting others at risk. I also think government don't want to allow it , because money is so tight specially for the lower-class. Jobs are hard to find now due to lockdown, most company's even on level4 and 3 are semi-working. Most industry's haven't kicked in. Lockdown is pretty much still in effect. Can those people afford to spend their last rands on cigarettes and booze? What is the price of a packet of ciggies these days like R40? Bottle of Alcohol is probably around the R50 to R80 per bottle.

I know everyone has their right to buy what they want to, it's obviously their own money. I think the government is trying to say... there is no money to spend on things that is not food or medication. Spend the money wisely.

By banning it, they taking the choice out of their hands.

Also banning stuff doesn't work , it's been proven to create problems for law enforcement and judiciary , but besides that it's unconstitutional and an infringement of people's rights.
And I don't just mean booze n cigs , I mean every substance should be for sale except maybe poisons .

The other factor.. which no one seemed to have dawned on yet. Is all shops and places and even Government is pushing this thing of wearing the mask. It needs to be worn whenever you leave your house. (public space is any space outside your house. So yes. Even in the car)

You have to keep the mask on when at your workplace or customer, when visiting the shops or chemist and anywhere you go really. Your not allowed to take it off.

So how will you smoke? without taking the mask off?
As anywhere outside of your house is a public space. Smoke areas are also public places.

Do you have to wear a mask?
According to the new regulations, South Africans must wear a cloth face mask, a homemade item, or “another appropriate item” that covers your nose and mouth when in a public place.

Yup, most countries in the world still haven't grasped that the War on Drugs is a monumental failure, drugs are cheaper and purer than ever before and the Cartels and criminals as violent as they have ever been.

How much money poured down the drain, fighting against people that would have zero power if drugs where legalized & regulated and addicts where offered treatment instead of prison.

UPDATE:

Jisses, mense is die moer in.
Almost 0.5 Million people in such a short amount of time... taking population size and class into account, this must surely be unprecedented in many ways.

My biggest gripe with this is information. A lot of people planned but it got extended, then allowed, then banned for who knows how long. They didn’t even announce much. People didn’t know to stock up at all. People thought it would be 3 weeks, prepared for 5 and guess what. Its getting even longer and there is no chance to restock.

Them making the decision, going back over it and now some corrupt vote was had, scares me more that anything.

If it’s about money it makes even less sense, as it’s around R100 a box of crappy quality illegal ones. What’s next? In the power trip

Any Carlin mention in 2020 deserves a response and at least a big-up for just knowing who he was.

I get why some people don't rate him high, it's very much a subjective personality thing and less about the "haha's", but as a "Carlin" person myself: Jesus Christ I miss that man.
There's only ever been two "celebrities" I can say whose opinion I deeply miss in this day and age, and it's Carlin and Christopher Hitchens.

Lame as it is, I sometimes try to imagine Hitchens commenting on the stuff that's been happening in the last few years since he died, I can't do it, not even remotely. Something truly special died with that man.
In this day and age with all this sjw/pc bs happening Hitchens is sorely missed.

I actually got these as a present from my uncle during Xmas time. but i don't drink at all. Like i never have for last 15years. I just chucked in a cabinet, next to the LTE router i also don't use anymore.

I think they just buy booze if they don't know what you like.. guess it's just easier that way.

I would actually say, on the balance of it, that I do not support the medium term ban on cigarettes. Due to the fact that it is unenforceable. I would like to see it banned, but only if it can be done effectively. Same with some alcohol.

Every day that passes, the illegal trade is becoming more effective and this government does not have enough competent resources to prevent it.

I believe that the way to reduce the damage, is to make it socially unacceptable. Point out the economic impact, the social impact, and the selfish attitudes the addictions enforces.

For example, you don't see people fornicating in a little group outside an office building (if you do, you should probably seek other employment or register as a sex worker)

Hard NO. This isn't the thread for you.

Of course you can’t. You’re neither smart, funny nor insightful. You’re just a seagull.

I've seen this pic on twitter. The reason why they banned it. Is cause Ciggies makes it quicker to transmit.
and the weakening of the immune system

Cape Town, South Africa (CNN)While liquor sales in many countries have been deemed essential during these days of social isolation, South Africa has taken the opposite approach.
The country has been on lockdown since March 26, in a bid to stop the spread of Covid-19, like many other places. But the rules are among some of the strictest in the world - you may only leave your home if you provide an essential service, or need to procure essential goods like food or medicine. On top of that, South Africa has banned the sale of cigarettes and alcohol, joining a short list of only three other countries: Thailand, Greenland, and parts of Mexico.

So, think of it as, South Africa is part of an Exclusive Club
