Ban on alcohol and cigarettes in South Africa

Yeah it doesn't...
But there's something that's been nagging at me that I want to share on this topic.

As someone who grew up on a farm initially with parents each working for the government in the Dept. of Agriculture for between 24 and 30 years, there was always a little word in their vocabulary that crept up, again and again in our household when Mom and Dad had a good kitchen rant about their ever-deteriorating workplace situation.
I would have been playing Ninja-Turtles in the next room, the guy who can't even remember your name if I met you yesterday, funny how that works.

That word was "spite"...

SPITE, so simple, elegant and well known, yet barely used and over the years I've seen first hand how many times that little word and the concept behind it has crept up over and over and over again when it comes to the ruling class in this country. Many people sometimes misinterpret the expression of it as some uber concerted "evil plan" when it's just the stars aligning in favour of such a simple human expression, ending up looking like something that's more than the sum of its parts, sometimes, that is.
In short: Those who underestimate spite see stupidity, and those who overestimate it see complicated conspiracies. The entire spite spectrum is valid, but most of it is pure, median spite, people being stupid corrupt poepholes trying their best to deceive us.

Anyway, so here's the thing, a petition will most probably be ignored, as usual. At most it will actually accomplish the opposite, they'll actually be less likely to change things out of spite.

BUT... we know now that we could get half a million people involved enough to fill in an annoying page, ok, let's be more conservative for the sake of sanity, that's 250,000 pissed off people to at least agree on something in a short amount of time, while we're sitting in our living rooms etc.

Also, we're all stuck here, right? Even between provinces. Many of us don't want to be, but it is what it is.
Point is, that a petition is nothing but a proxy to gauge outrage and confirms something we couldn't possibly declare with certainty between ourselves even 48 hours ago: baie mense is die **** in, and I am too. I assumed it, now I know it.

Sounds stupid, but it's a mental thing and one of the reasons governments hate the spread of information and will always attempt to control the internet/opinion is that unknown factor that crops up when you have numbers and resources. Our government is so f0kken dom that'll probably never happen, even if they try. That's something we have on our side... and the current demographic of people that are slowly waking up to this is the one they fear the most.

Knowing that there are others out there that are willing to draw the line is only a first step in figuring out what "drawing the line" even means. South-Africa's middle and upper class have never really had to express themselves physically, even fat sedentary Americans will kick our asses on that front. I feel like I can write a book on that topic alone, but let's just accept that yes, middle and upper-class folks (me and you) are tos at this

Also, has anyone else noticed, people on MyBB used to be at each other's throats all the time, a true shitshow, in fact, this place used to be crawling in dipsh1ts... these days I find myself coming here more and more because I see comments and perceptions that are so far superior to the horsesh1t on social media etc. It's like there's been a "pettiness cleanse".
People I've probably disagreed with vehemently in the past about whatever crappy subject, now suddenly dropping comments on topics that are so relevant and to the point that I can barely speak to others outside of MyBB without feeling they're 20 steps behind.

I just spent 2 hours earlier this evening reading MyBB comments on my phone and completely ignoring a f**kton of new movies on my PC I could have rather watched... and I couldn't even keep up with the "like" button on comments, that's not something that ever really happened before.

I would shake you hand, but..

Our problem is that the ban is economically linked, its linked to the fact that the one making the laws have ties to those that "break" em. I would almost bet that NDZ is getting a backhand in the illegal sales as photo's of her and known smugglers have been surfacing to the fact that Edward Zuma is partners with them.

You'd think that but the dollar seems to be doing okay. The emerging markets lost around 4% yesterday again.

I'm in the same boat. Been sober for a while but I cringe to think what those people who are still addicted to alcohol must got through. Alcohol withdrawels is something you can die of.

I also heard from a friend when that when the lockdown started the clinics basically went to skeleten staff as well.

This not getting smokes thing is getting me down, or more the fact that the presendent promised us and then that f***wit took the promise away to serve her own agenda and line her families pockets.

only thing I smoke is cigars as well, but max 2-3 a year so the tobacco ban doesn't affect me, not being able to get decent wine is an outrage however!

It is extremely painful I know. By the way, who the heck shares cigarettes with covid-19 around? Who smokes a hookah (are we in Cario, Istanbul??) and shares it with covid-19 around? If a person is that dumb, then they should go the way Darwin researched ffs.
