Cigarettes are banned and we will not back down – Government

The South African government has stated it will not back down on its decision to ban the sale of cigarettes.

The Sunday Times reported that Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu said there is no possibility of talks with the cigarette industry.
I like how he says we have very good reasons... No they don't actually, their reasoning is really stupid. People share cigarettes so that means it can spread. But what about cooldrinks, chips, pap and other things people share?

Of course they won't back down. Doubling down on stupidity is their way.
Yup look at the hot food issue, instead of realising they spoke out of turn they signed it into the gazette for nonsensical reasons as well.

One interesting debate I just had with my neighbor, an argument for the legalization could be in the same line as legalizing sex traffic. That is if you legalese it, it can be controlled. If you force it underground you have no control on how "it" could spread diseases.

If a cashier at say checkers gets ConvID, you can close/sterilize and control further spread. If a dealer gets it he/she will spread it. If he/she is already breaking quarantine to sell underground goods what makes you think he/she will stay at home once showing flu like symptoms. You know at least the shops will pay attention when one of their workers start looking ill, a dealer not so much.

And we know the virus can stay on plastic (Wrapping around packets/cartons) for 2-3 days. Also if you had no control on the illegal movement in total lockdown, what makes you think with increase movement (Jogging and people returning to work) will you be able to get better at it.

TLDR: Illegal trade can actually enhance the spread of the virus.

Of course they will not back down. Firstly, this will be an indication that the South African government is indeed involved in the illicit tabaco industry and benefitting from it. Secondly, since the trade also involves US Dollars, sanctions may soon be on its way against South Africa. In addition to this, while the State's legal attorneys will focus on defending the government against the allegations of their involvement with syndicates, the legal team for BAT will focus on the real facts of the decision on the ban and give government a real big hiding.

By the way, I do hope these syndicates did not threaten the lives of the politicians and there families :) They all will be in real big trouble real soon....

I have said it before and will say it again here now, people need to understand this is a ideological fight for them, they fully believe that tobacco and alcohol (books, pornography and western Christian religion) is used as a tool by the white western imperialists to undermine the black African and then take advantage of him/her and their resources. Why do you think the hat wearing idiot that loves to play Hitler said he would love to see the ban continue indefinitely. Why in the face of rigid opposition does Zuma continue, why have they now said they will not back down.

I think South Africans would do well to accept the possible reality that you will never see legal smokes and booze on sale in SA again. That said we will all soon forget this triviality.

Glamini Zuma is big friends with that sigarette smagler and Zumas sun have a company, kings cigarettes in Kzn. So no surprise that there is a ban on cigarettes. You can buy there sigarettes on the black market at double the price.

The only threat they made was that the millions in kickbacks would dry up ....

The trouble is the list goes on and on like sugar being toxic for the immune system. Add banning of all snack food. I would rather have said no treatment for any violent cuts of drunk / intoxicated during lock down. Then it's communicating adult to adult. This lock down is parent to child communication which keeps people in child mode. Voters who are deciding on the president need to have self control or not be allowed to vote.

Yep. Whoever still thinks that the ANC wouldn't take full advantage of the lockdown to loot and steal needs to catch a wake up.

There have been allegations of NDZ being connected to cigarette smuggling for a while now, so her extending a ban on tabacco products, which are way outside her portfolio, could easily be seen as evidence of gross criminality, given that smuggled cigarettes have more than doubled in price and are freely available. It seems very much as though government has willingly given criminal syndicates control of the cigarette trade.

Even more worrying is that a minister can seemingly overrule any presidential regulation he/she sees fit. We should be asking ourselves who is actually in charge at this stage.
And the crazy thing is she used this source of income to fund her race against CR. He does not appear to see that the Zuma faction is re funding themselves.

He must see it, and that's what's worrying. Who is in charge at the moment?
