What they need to do is triple (or more) the sin tax across the board when they re-open the bottle and smoke stores. that will limit the stampede and reduce the socila distancing issues.Yip, the letter must have outlined when the sale of cigarettes (and possibly alcohol) would be reintroduced. No ways Pretoria can say they don't feel the drop in sin tax revenue. Let the flood gates open; those billions in rands will be needed.
EDIT: I hope they don't add additional tax on the wine
Eish... no more decent wine.. We are all going to drink papsak wyn.Coming soon to South Africa
India imposes 70% 'corona tax' on alcohol to deter large crowds
Officials in India's capital imposed a special tax of 70% on retail liquor purchases from Tuesday, to deter large gatherings at stores as authorities ease a six-week lockdown imposed to slow the spread of the coronavirus.www.iol.co.za
FFS stop harping on about sweets and sugary drinks, you're aware obesity isn't caused by sweets right, neither is diabetes? Honestly if you want to harp on about obesity, than the exercise issue should be brought on.CR has lost the plot under the pressure he's getting from the slug and her Zumaist collaborators.
First he said the decision to extend the ban on tobacco products was not an attempt by the slug trying to undermine him but a decision by the collective.
Now he says their only conern is for the peoples' health.
Therefore the only conclusion is that the collective's sole reason for the extended ban on tobacco is their concern for the peoples' health.
If that is going to be their defence in any upcoming court cases they are screwed.
Didn't any of their advisors explain to them the effects of obesity on the human body yet sweets, chips and sugary cooldrinks are considered essential.
Council for FITA and BATSA must be licking their lips.
And should the courts find the ban was unjust and without merit all smokers should start a class action and sue them for infringing their rghts enshrined in Chapter 2 of our constitution.
Maybe it's time someone remind them of the Freedom Charter.
The people shall govern you power drunk bunch of parasitic excrement.
With them dropping the court case, this better bloody hurry up. There was pressure to get it unbanned and such, but now it seems like the government can take their sweet Africa time to introduce it again.

Lawyers mull action on powers of Covid-19 National Command Council
'We are busy with our legal team to consider the content of Ramaphosa's response and we are having a meeting later to decide the way forward'www.iol.co.za
Interesting. I hope they follow through with court action coz threats are tiring now.
They really know how best to raise hope and squash it flat again.![]()
Do I detect a "righteous" one or is he being frivolous? I detest "righteous" ones. What they need to do is triple (or more) the sin tax across the board when they re-open the bottle and smoke stores. that will limit the stampede and reduce the socila distancing issues.
**** you.Do I detect a "righteous" one or is he being frivolous? I detest "righteous" ones.
**** you.
I have long held true with the course that says even though I don't drink or smoke, I support the lifting of the ban.
The reasons for suggesting the increase on the tax are given in my post. Also, it seems in line with what India is doing to limit lines at bottle stores.
As someone who doesn't drink and barely smokes (no problem without smokes at the moment tbh), I agree with you whole heatedly.
Also agree that the route India has taken provides a good middle ground for sales to continue... However... If they put a 70% sin tax on these items here in SA, that tax will never go away!
