Party today like there is no tomorrow. That makes sense because there may be no tomorrow.

Actually lately they're made from non-nutritive sweetners, also you're aware there are 2 types right? And even type 2 it's skeptical that sugar causes diabetes. If sugar is causing you to put on weight than it's a possible cause, but carbohydrates and other things can also make you put on weight. So next up ban bread, pap and anything with carbs, people will bant.

Most sweets are made with sugar. People still drink and buy plenty of sugar made drinks too and while those help. Non-nutritive sweetners aren't all diabetic friendly. Yes I'm aware of type 1 diabetes but they also benefit from reducing their sugar intake and maybe more people would realize this if they had access to continuous glucose monitors?

Giving up carbs is pretty much a surefire way to get rid of diabetes but it requires change. Is sugar the only cause? No but to say it isn't a cause, is ridiculous. Fructose is arguably worse for people but that's another story, as are seed oils. Are there other factors to diabetes and obesity? Yes e.g. glycemic load, stress. Does that give sugar a pass? Objectively no. People can reap a lot of health benefits by just eliminating added sugar from their diets.

Arguably shouldn't we be promoting something to get rid of diabetes like low carb diets? If diabetes is a serious factor in covid deaths then targetting it should be our priority?

I'm not suggesting banning anything though and now that I'm much healthier through diet I can make allowances for some exceptions from time to time.

YES YES that evil minority that keeps pouring billions of tax payer money into South African Airways, looting billions from the treasury and how they plunged every municipality and SOE into the ground. And lets not forget whenever load shedding kicks in, just blame those arrogant minorities.

Sweets are made from sugar, sugar causes diabetes.
That's a BS statement if ever there was one, if it where true anyone who consistently consumed sugar over a prolonged period would develop diabetes and that is clearly not the case.

As to what is currently accepted, excessive consumption of sugar leading to be overweight with increased body fat is an indirect risk factor in terms of developing type 2 diabetes.

Sugar in itself does not cause diabetes.

People guzzling sweeties and sugary cooldrinks during the lockdown like its their last meal before execution. Bound to cause health problems. Much worse than smoking fags on their own.

Inheritance must be added to the mix.

From a google "Tooth decay is caused by bacteria in the mouth using sugar from foods and drinks to produce acids that dissolve and damage the teeth. Sugar sweetened beverages have high levels of sugar and drinking these can significantly contribute to tooth decay. ... Each acid attack lasts for around 20 minutes. "

and not good for sexual healh either "The chronic inflammation that is caused by gum disease may damage your endothelial cells, which form the lining on all of your blood vessels (including the blood vessels in your penis). This damage to your endothelia cells can result in impaired blood flow, leading to erectile dysfunction"

But everyone needs their fix. I will not tell the meenasta if you don't.

As someone who doesn't drink and barely smokes (no problem without smokes at the moment tbh), I agree with you whole heatedly.

Also agree that the route India has taken provides a good middle ground for sales to continue... However... If they put a 70% sin tax on these items here in SA, that tax will never go away!

Yes, exactly! Please, not this.

I've already paid enough "sin tax" in the past 6 weeks to last a lifetime and it's all going straight into that whore witch's back pocket.

There are other creative ways I'm sure the government will dream up to deal with this anyway - like only permitting the sale of cigarettes and alcohol between the hours of 4am and 5am on February 29th (if we're good).

Are you and Lupus agents acting on behalf of the slug and other assorted crackpots in the NCC.

Very mischievous of you two trying to derail the discussion whether the ban on cigarettes and alcohol is constitutional.

LOL whatever, BS statements are BS statements regardless of what side of a debate you are on. If you are going to make a decent argument against the ban (which I am also against) at the very least try to show a but more logic and grasp of the facts than the government.

We didn't derail it with incorrect information.

I am disappointed in BAT for backing down, but at the same time, if they've received some form of communication from the NCC that indicates the likelihood of cigarette sales being allowed before a court would get through the process then it is understandable.

I would guess that whatever communication they received would have been a bit more concrete than a "We will think about allowing it" though... BAT are not stupid, and they would only back down if they had something concrete. Its either that, or the government response plainly told them they would fight everything to the bitter end and that could take a year or more and be entirely pointless anyway.
It's cool, I don't smoke their overpriced sh|t anyway.
