Bandwidth isn’t free, but it’s darn cheap

But in south africa, multiply all the costs by 5. You need to hire 5x more people (because laziness of the workforce dictates that only 1 in 5 is ever doing their job), you'll need to cover the damages the workforce incur (through hitting random water pipes, breaking cables and general violent strikes).

I heard a figure for neotel backhaul bandwidth. R5/mb/meter. Thats wildly expensive. At those prices we will never have affordable high speed internet

Fact is, SA do not have the Internet user numbers to justify cheap internet access and this will not change any time soon.

What about in heavily populated areas? Surely it can be profitable then?

I.e. surely JHB, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban should have enough people to make fibre a viable option?

Yea! and the main darn reason is that we have had all our cables stolen! I think nearly every residential suburb in SA is without cables or most of them anyway. No figures are published! Almost the entire Midrand areas (residential) are without telkom cable. I know of the ff: Olifantsfontein, President Park, Glen Austin, Noordwyk, Vorna Valley, Kayalami & Blue Hills - Telkom doesn't give a hoot!
