Bandwidth management and P2P

Are Sentech managing bandwidth by choking your entire connection the moment you use P2P software? I've noticed that when I have eMule or BitSpirit running, even if they are not actually downloading, my connection essentially dies. Close eMule/Bitspirit, and a few minutes later (or after a disconnect/reconnect), my 128kbps connection returns to its normal 14-28kbps blinding speeds.

Although my solution I had there ( randomizing the port ) no longer seems to work. I even managed to get Bittorent to go through port 21, but my bandwidth still dies.

I don't know if it is active throttling, or just some side-effect of TCP/IP. I can't see how Sentech can detect P2P traffic at that level... as Claymore said, even if nothing is downloading or uploading, as long as my Torrent client is open my bandwith is dead.

its a side effect.. or a time managed thing. I have seen the phenomenon you speak of. Close emule etc and browsing speeds up (obviously I mean theres now free bandwidth) but what Im talking about is 14KB/sec spikes in my traffic graph when browsing. On vee uvver hand, other times (oddly .. like now) I can browse freely with some P2P stuff running no probs. Im sticking to blaming the network that has a mind of its own. Its random bandwidth management..

What beats me is how bandwidth management is going to fix things. There will be losers since they will have to take away BW in parts. Never do they say : we will be adding bandwidth. Never. And we would believe them if they said that. But again, they dont realise this.

IMO network "abuse" is not the problem. With contention etc everything should work like ADSL/ISDN/dialup where you get good speed. Either there is no bandwidth available or the software sucks or the bandwidth is going somewhere its not supposed to be (hackers or Telkom/IS is contending it with corporates etc)

i normally set upload limit to 3KB/s and Download limit to 10 KB/s. I find that I can do some browsing and even download mail from my account at Hetzner.

If packet inspection techniques were used to identify data (like packeteer) it would be possible to rate limit traffic no matter what port it was sent on.

While this may be the case at some time in the future I believe that the current issues surrounding p2p bandwidth has to do with too many connections flooding the lossy connection (MySmokeSignal)

Actually I doubt they "choke" you connection when you use P2P software. I know that torrents actually waste bandwidth by monitoring the bandwidth used on the linux gateway we use. Sometimes when only my torrents are downloading I download in total at about 8k/s according to the torrent program. But in actual fact 14k/s of data is received according to the linux gateway. So 6k/s of it is wasted. I guess the amount of bandwidth wasted depends on from whom your downloading and from how many people. But bandwidth is wasted.

I have tried 3 different ftp's and downloaded a file of approx 1MB; my dl max out at 6KB/s on ftp.is.co.za , ftp.saix.net and ftp.cdrom.com. You can't tell me all three ftp sites are limiting you to 6KB/s - thats like dial-up speeds. Are these guys testing bandwidth management software? Anybody else see this - especially on 256k?
