What do you run on your firewall? Is it a Linux or Windows pc, or is it just a plain router?

Just a plain router hey and a switch so theres just really a plain network and then the pc's have normal firewalls on but i can disable them in the mornings if i wanted to :p

I would suggest you look at putting in a dedicated firewall as you'll have the means to block torrents and other bandwidth-wasting applications. ;)

RoCkFoRdGuN, I presume you are a IT admin / tech for a company ?
Why not pitch the idea for a PC running a Linux based firewall / monitor / filter app ?
ClearOS /IPCOP / etc would be your best bet !

I have been trying for years to get my head around linux but i just cant hey LOL
I worked for a isp for many years and i tried over and over to teach myself to do it but im struggling with it.
I know for a fact thats the best way to go but if i just knew how it works and believe me that was the first thing that came to mind was Linux but i dunno where to start on Linux :p
So im trying to keep it simple

Go with Smoothwall or IPCop - these are the simplest and easiest to use.

Really not rocket science to install either of the Distros I mentioned - in actual fact they are GUI based. and the guides to get them to run are less than 2 pages long - most of which are pictures anyway !
I am not a linux geek and managed to set this up in < 1hour
Running the thing in VMware will just complicate things evenmore, as you have to set up virtual machine network adapters and etc etc.
IPCOP will run on a P3 ;-)
I would suggest going to ClearOS though ! (Ex ClarkConnect)

A P2 running at 340MHz with 256Mb RAM will be just fine. Keep in mind that the HDD you'll want to use MUST be larger than 5Gb in order to facilitate proper logrotation, otherwise the HDD will fill up with logs. Best to do is to go with a 10Gb or better.

Logrotation means that the current log is zipped up to an archive, and is deleted after a set time, so that the firewall doesn't have to deal with a huge log file.

Don't complicate things with VMWare etc, leave that to the experts.

Well i think putting a Hardware firewall between Router and Network
would be simplest for you. on the other hand if there are not lots of computers then install some data collecting
softwares like Onlinetimer and install it on all system.. now check their usage after a week :D

Onlu issue is the one lady that i think is the culprit brings in her own pc any know different ports for torrents maybe ?
i have between ports 6881-6889 but im stil missing a few
