Bank branches where you can sign up for your Smart ID card

Home Affairs launched its online Smart ID and passport applications in 2016, offering South Africans a way to apply for Smart IDs online.

The Department of Home Affairs website allows South Africans from all over the country to apply online for a new Smart ID by completing an application and submitting supporting documents.

Are you required to be a customer of the said bank you're applying from? I remember that was a requirement before.

I did the application and payment online and it was pretty easy. I opted to visit a DHA branch since I have free time but my schedule is erratic. If you are on the East Rand or don't mind the drive I would suggest the Germiston branch. Germiston CBD does look dodgy but the part the branch is located in is pretty ok.

Have they added new banks? If not, this is basically regurgitated news?

Still one place in the whole of Cape Town hey...alright...

I just came to comment on that, 11 for Gauteng, one for the WC. Canal walk is far, they could at least had one in NS and one in the SS's.

Christ are some ppl still using their old id books(I'm not referring to the old, indigent and poor)?
I got my new id card in 2015 already whilst on a return trip to S.A from UK, was plain sailing...

I got a new ID Book 3 months ago...

I tried to get a SmartID 3 times, and failed to get into home affairs 3 times, so went fsck it and went to a small branch HA office and got an ID Book in short order.

Yes (except if you are over 60 and can get an ID for free, then you can use any bank because there is no payment, and maybe for first issue of ID), unless you get someone else with the relevant bank to do payment for you.

Your comment is kind of ignorant. If you had even the slightest idea of the effort and days leave required to try and get a ID card at a typical home affairs office you would realise that.

foreign born allowed smart ID?
nope, well ill stick with my falling apart ID book.

Naturalised citizens (not citizens by birth but have attained citizenship in South Africa) also don’t qualify to apply for new Smart ID card.

I know of 2 domestic workers from Zimbabwe who got smart ID's. (Not ours - cough cough). They are naturalized SA citizens and had Zim passport prior to getting SA passport. I have no idea how this is possible unless they were born in SA but got Zim citizenship via their parents and then got SA citizenship by naturalization.
