Telkom often claims that few users are affected by the cap.

A suggestion for comment:

If many users deliberately manage their bandwidth usage such that they exceed it on the last day of the month, Telkom looses the ability to claim that only a few users are affected.

A suggested download if you want to join me www.knoppix.org

I will have downloaded around 10GB this month on 2 accounts. Mostly Linux related.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if all the thousands of ADSL users ran their connections flat out on the last day of the month. Would it really affect international, or local, speeds?

I guess Telkom take some risk by not capping local access. They assume, probably correctly, that there isn't enough local data to keep everyone running local transfers flat-out. Or is it actually that we have a good local network that could never be saturated by ADSL users?

Either way, it probably wouldn't take much provocation to make Telkom make capping even more vicious. I can imagine getting disconnected every hour so Telkom could update my usage stats. Ouch :)

BTW, Koppix seems to have a local mirror, which is what I'd use.

I just did, got just under a gig last night. was sitting on 2.96 yesterday morn and then just hit it hard at about 5. My only worry is that i hit as i said 900 odd meg, but on the usage tracker it only claims i used 70meg. If it ends up showing on the 1st's usage I am gonna be so hacked off.

You've misunderstood, DOMINIC - the way I read it, KAS was suggesting that you download the Knoppix linux distro, if you want to see the effect of how to exceeed the volume cap limitation on the last day of the month. It's not a utility, unless you consider the whole of Linux to be one [;)]. You can in fact download any .iso distribution for a maximal constant download - as these are each about the size of a CD (650-700Mb), you'd easily push past your 3Gb max...
