Mbeki urges cheap SA phone calls

What I don't get is that he's the one who appointed the minister who's supposed to be making the prices come down.

If she's not doing her job properly then surely her boss has to do something about it...

I seriously think its time to lobby for her removal.....any ideas on how we get the ball rolling on this? is there anything in the guidelines for government of whatever the hell its called where the public can call for the removal of an incompetent minister?

I agree. I'm not sure how it works, but it is possible for any group or private person to table a matter in parliament through section 56 (d) of the constitution.

The reason I remember it is because the Pretoria Civil Action Commitee used it to oppose the Pretoria name change and have it discussed in parliament.

There must be some way we can use this to express our opinion that she should resign and have it discussed as well.

Check out this for example (scroll down for English):

I am not sure about SA Law, but in any Democracy, there are supposed to be checks and balances in place to have a balance of powers.

ALL government officials should be accountable for their actions or their inactions (or ineptitude).

Parliament represents the provinces and the people. YOU voted for THEM, they are your duly elected representatives.

So write letters to parliament, especially opposition parties (they are always looking for a good reason to throw stones at the ANC)

A few individual letters to a few scattered members of parliament may not make a difference.

However, a well thought, well motivated, clear and compelling letter (or petition) delivered to the right people in Parliament, with copies to all concerned government officials, signed by a few thousand South African VOTERS... will make them think twice before throwing that letter in the trash.

Just my opinion.

re Mbeki urges cheap SA phone calls - so what? He can urge for the need for popcorn and candyfloss for all citizens, and it means equally nothing.

However, it SOUNDS like he's really trying hard, which is all that he cares about. One little mention back in February and another in September tells you he's playing to his constituents and trying to give the impression of being a rough tough President, fighting hard to get a good deal for his slaves - er - citizens. Bollocks.

A petition might do it, with very big letters showing the quotes from Mbeki in this regard - and choice quotes from the ICASA findings, alongside Telkom total profit announcement..

One would need to clearly show that this is something that 'the President wants' - in order to shut up those stupid barely articulate chicken-hugging morbidly obese fat swine soaking up our taxpayer money and pretending to be in Parliament 'for us', but in reality, just loving the power and sucking up money like baby pigs on a teat, wallowing in mud in a farmyard somewhere.
*ahem* sorry :)

ROFL @ LG. I understand completely and that's not mud, it's mud imported from the dead sea.

I have had enough of Ivy the freeloader as well, time for us to act. I hope there is a way where we can action some form of enquiry or something through recognised channels.
She has an abysmal record and should be brought to book as the politicians love to say, then fired, cause she just isnt any good.
edit: good to see you got the spirit back Peapod!:)

The question though is would Mbeki risk firing his Minister of Communications at this point in time? Keep in mind that the sacking of Jacob Zuma as deputy president is threatening to tear apart the tri-partheid alliance. This may just be too much of a risk for the ANC.

He's her boss.. aren't people supposed to do what their bosses TELL them to do?!

What has ivy done this year? Let's see... she stopped complete liberalisation of the market on the 31st of January, she made the "people like me" statement in parliament, and now she "says" that LLU need to take place.. judging by your track record for this year (you've done 3 things this year), LLU should take place (maybe) by the 2010 soccer world cup.

WAKE UP FFS!!

On the other side, it would show that he is doing HIS job and is competent enough to be president of South Africa. If he does this, the ANC will get my vote.

Bwahahahahahahahahah.
Well they sure fooled you. They lay idle for 3 years, and then at the last possible second, they suddenly start doing stuff, and then you simply forget the last 3 years.
Wake up Roosta.

While I agree with your sentiments (both) I think the SACP/Cosatu/Alliance break up would be the healthiest thing in the world for this country.

Seeing as "myadsl.co.z" has got an excellent footing in the Telecoms "Awareness" sector. Seeing that you guys keep on putting spanners in the works of things and keep on bringing "Telskums" nonsense to the forefront. Dont you think its time to throw another spanner in the works????

By this I mean getting a vote of "No Confidence" in Minister Ivy Dum ass Casablanca.
How??? How Much??? and How Long????

Even if she does not get fired! Atleast the media attention that will generate from it will most deffinately have a positive impact on all this "Liberisation" of Telecoms??

Who are lawyers out there???

No, what I'm saying is: maybe it would mean that government have started to wake up and are dealing with the real issues. But talk is cheap, show me some action then they'll get my vote.

But IF ANC forced government to start doing their jobs, properly, why would you want them to leave?

Firing her may not necessarily be up to the president... she can face impeachment by parliament if they start an inquiry and decide that there was serious misconduct on her part, so the decision need not be taken by Mbeki...
