If you don't have unpaid fines, you have nothing to worry about, yes?

not necessarily,
need to pay the cool-drink tax.

SA cops want something for their "trouble"
Why would you be threatened with arrest when your vehicle is roadworthy, your licence is valid and you have no overdue fines, and you refuse to pay a bribe??

Here's a thought... what if you don't know you have unpaid traffic fines?
Then you go and check on the AARTO website before you embark on your journey, or the numerous other websites that offer similar services.

Don't glorify the problem.

You're being silly.

Yes, fines should be paid where they're valid.

But arrest is not described as a punishment or consequence for not paying. If there's a warrant it may be a different matter, but unpaid fines are not an arrestable offense.

That's a rather extraordinary experience. Wow.

Why am I silly? If you committed a traffic offence and were issued with a fine, you need to either dispute it officially or pay it.

Am I missing something?

You're intentionally obfuscating the issue.

The point of the article was clearly that you cannot be arrested for unpaid fines. Not whether or not you should have paid your fines. The article points to corruption and an overreach of power.

I shared that experience, when I was nearly arrested the one time,
sebenza SAPS, even drove my car, wanted to throw me in jail for stopping to talk on the phone.
wanted bribe money, I figured it was the end of their shift, here's a whitey, well dressed,
lets scare the Cr@p out of him, and try to get something for our "trouble"

All I'm saying is that if you don't have unpaid fines, this overreach of authority doesn't apply to you. Leave it to the legal experts of JPSA to challenge.

Not exactly. The fact that they're stating this and we're discussing it already points to their corruption. So the fact you don't have fines doesn't mean they will suddenly be moral, upstanding law-enforcement officers.
