Be wary of unlawful arrests if you're stopped by cops over the holidays

Then you go and check on the AARTO website before you embark on your journey, or the numerous other websites that offer similar services.

Don't glorify the problem.
You mean those third party services that got hacked and exposed all their user's information to the wide Internet?

Why am I silly? If you committed a traffic offence and were issued with a fine, you need to either dispute it officially or pay it.

Am I missing something?

Yes, if you do not pay the fine within the specified time they need to issue a summons so you can argue your case in court.

Having an unpaid fine is not a crime, the next step is for them to serve summons, not arrest you, unless you didn't appear in court and there is now an arrest warrant out but that's another matter all together.

I'm sure those with overdue fines would be happy to follow due process in that case and take up this threat of abusing powers with the authorities.

My point was that there are ways for drivers to check whether they have outstanding fines.

I don't pay any fines directly or immediately... AARTO or CPA.
I wait until I have to renew my vehicle licence and then they usually tell me which fines are outstanding. And I pay them there and then.
That way any fines which were unlawfully issued or problematic will get automatically withdrawn.
Usually they only tell me to pay the fines which have been handed over (arrest warrant for CPA, Enforcement order for AARTO).
The nice thing about the Bedordview drive through lane is that they can call up for JHB or East Rand.
And I can pay everything on my credit card on one invoice.

Ditto! So I do pay my dues!

Of course there are...

But why should I have to worry about unlawful arrest over unpaid fines? What kind of bullshyte worry is that?
In this case the only people who worry are those with overdue fines.

I think you are missing the point on purpose.
I'm not worried about a problem I don't have. For me it's the same argument tabled on how many alcoholic drinks you can have before you're over the limit.

I think this one (LBwhatever) is being deliberately annoying.

It's common knowledge that there's rampant corruption, that AARTO doesn't cover all areas, and that traffic notifications are illegally served or go undelivered.

Correct. Its for the owner of the vehicle to check.

No question on that front at all.

What is at issue here is why the hell I must worry about an unlawful arrest because I have unpaid fines (whether they are known or unknown). The only illegal action in this situation is on the part of the law enforcement agencies.

you've obviously never been to the east rand.
at one stage saw my wallet, opened it and took money out of it in front of my eyes.

those guys are bigger criminals that the actual criminals.
A previous colleague of mine made some very good colour photocopies of R100 notes and kept that in an old wallet in the console of his car specific for bribe purposes. When demands was made, he opened up this wallet counted off some blue notes and inconspicuously handed them to the traffic cop. For obvious reasons the person accepting the bribe don't inspect the notes in full view of everyone, and he then drives off without being bothered further.
