Springbok prop Beast Mtawarira's eligibility to play for the South African rugby team has apparently been called into question by the Sports Ministry.

And, it is understood, if they have their way, Mtawarira will not board the plane to France next Tuesday with the players who'll in all likelihood start for the Boks against France in Toulouse next Friday.

The rest of the Bok tour party left South Africa last Tuesday.

...

The Sports Ministry is apparently investigating how it came about that Mtawarira, who is a Zimbabwean citizen, is playing for the Boks.

With all these illegal Zimbabweans who are criminals and stealing jobs from South Africans the government targets the one man who is doing this country a service and is clearly no criminal!:mad::mad:

It did cross my mind once how we could've gone from a quota system, to having 3 Zimbabweans playing for the boks (Chavanga, Mujati and Beast). Fair?

But I thought - let them play! The politicians probably won't look any deeper than their skin colour - so we'll have good players and the government/population sees transformation. Win -win. :D

Another Q...? Why do the Zimbabwean players perform better than our local guys..?:)

Seems he's been cleared to play for now.

Story here:
http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=6&click_id=194&art_id=iol1257611815833B232

Tendai 'Beast' Mtawarira has been cleared to tour with the Springbok squad following discussions between the South African Rugby Union (Saru) and the Sports Ministry.

Saru was alerted to clauses in the National Sport & Recreation Amendment Act, 2007, which needed to be completed before Zimbabwean-born Mtawarira's place in the end-of-year tour squad could be confirmed.

"We are delighted with the news after discovering this problem during the week," said Saru president Oregan Hoskins.

"The government has been very helpful in expediting the completion of the necessary protocols and we're all relieved that Beast will be available for selection for the Springboks against France in Toulouse on Friday."

The protocol revolved around clause 6(3) of the National Sport and Recreation Amendment Act of 2007, which requires an explanation to the Minister of Sport for the selection of non-South African nationals. - Sapa

I hope they don't turn him into a political toy as they did with Kennede Tsimba...

Beast might not play for Boks

London - The South African government says Tendai "Beast" Mtawarira is ineligible to play for the Springboks, but won't prevent the star prop from playing the Test against France in Toulouse on Friday.

The South African Rugby Union (Saru), after talks with government officials last week, announced last weekend that Zimbabwe-born Mtawarira, who has played 19 tests for the Springboks since last year, was cleared to join their tour of Europe.

But the Sports Ministry released a statement late Wednesday that it was "unhappy" that Mtawarira wasn't a South African citizen, passport-holder or permanent resident, and that he had only a work permit to play for the Sharks. The ministry also implied Saru was defying immigration laws and "trying to slip (Mtawarira) through the legal framework."

These guys must make up their minds, beginning to sound like Eskom.

I still think it would be better if he and all the others played for ZIM. They could actually have quiet a good side all in all if they took all their players born there. Like that Oke in the USA that played in World Cup. What about all the "when wes" that were born there also. Was not Bobby Skinstad born there?

Same with their cricket team. I think Paul Harris was born there and in the past Hicks etc

Yeah, I heard on the radio today that while government has "no idea" how many illegal immigrants are in SA, the SAPS (I think) estimates there are 6 million. So what do they do? They take the ones at the top down. Nevermind those committing crimes, etc. get those who are better than us.

The Sports Ministry has wasted some more of your money by placing and ad in today's paper.

Lolled at the statement that Dan Carter can't play for Wales.

And the ministry insisted that they know all the laws. Who voted for them again?
