Can one buy these seperately?

I tried Furniture City and the majority come as a mattress/base set. Any idea's where else I could try? Also, how much are bases?

Definately. Try Dial-a-Bed. Mostly they sell either matress only or matress/base set, but if you need the base only they'll make a plan.

EDIT: Or Beds-For-Africa. I have a seperate base / headboard combo and needed only the matress.

Yea most places are the combo/mattress only - but you're right - Dial a Bed made a plan and will get me one for R1200.00 :)

Thanks!

What do those bases do any way? Could never figure out why they're so low to the floor, always bang my toes against them.

Looks better (to me) if a bed has a base

They are just a few planks of wood covered in fabric ffs. Then you have to fit a nightfrill and as mentioned you stub your toes.

As an ex bed salesman the reason is rather simple:

One: to lift it off the floor - as daft as it what it may seem it is true. A low bed is the most unhealthiest thing for your back when you get out of it in the morning. The back muscles are still tight and this puts unnecessary stress on it.

Second: To enhance the mattress's support and on certain modules there live span. A mattress is most effect on a flat surface (use to get township guys putting mattress on drums ... )

Also a spring mattress extends the life of a mattress by 30% - like the shocks for your car.

But the purpose of this thread: But you can buy a base separate but usually only at a bed specialist.

But surely a wooden bed with long enough legs achieves the same purpose?

I agree, and it looks nice. Some mahogany, or such.

Yes, something in a dark wood, nice and plain, no head board or foot board.

Sleigh beds are just way over priced.

Fortunately my old man's in the joinery business, having one made as we speak. :D

I prefer a base personally ... and prefer a headboard/side tables ;)

Agree with mahogany wood.

From what I remember... you can use a slatted wooden base for a foam mattress (eg. the high density foam). You need the padded bed&base type base for a spring mattress.

Foam mattress doesn't come close to a spring mattress for comfort. But yes, you need a solid base for a spring mattress, which can also be achieved with a wooden bed.

Fascinating. Have been sleeping on a flat futon for almost 10 years and have never realised it's actually bad for you.
