The Benin government is forcing MTN and another operator to pay 30 billion CFA francs (R452 million), representing a 500 percent hike.

MTN's crime, according to the Benin government, is that it bought into an existing company and did not seek permission to rebrand the group.

IMO Benin is just another corrupt African country - at least that's the impression I get reading about the blackmail that Benin is subjecting MTN to over there, I mean seriously R452 million to change the company's name on its operating licence after a buyout by MTN, can only be interpreted as extortion. I wouldn't be surprised if Benin is still scratching its collective head in a few years time wondering why there is no new foreign investment streaming into Benin...
