Hey guys. I don't suppose anyone has any strong feelings on what is the best budget Android handset at the moment?

Taking a look at the latest Vodacom catalogue, I can see a grand total of five Android phones that are free on TopUp 135 (I'm excluding the Galaxy Y, since it's inferior to the Gio):

Keyboard:

1. Samsung Galaxy Y Pro
2. LG Optimus Pro
3. HTC ChaCha

Touchscreen:

4. Samsung Galaxy Gio
5. Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman

After a quick scan through the specs, I'm tempted to say that the ChaCha is the best of the keyboard models (higher screen resolution, better camera, nicer build quality), and the Live with Walkman (a stupid name for a phone btw) is the best of the touchscreens (it's the only one of the bunch with a 1ghz processor). The Live with Walkman is probably the best overall, unless you really need a hardware keyboard. Does this seem like a fair assessment?

Does it have to be on Top Up 135? MTN has the HTC Desire S for R89 a month on their Anytime 100, and the Samsung Galaxy S for R119 a month on the same contract... Can't remember offhand what else they give you with the contract, will update when I'm back at my PC.

I'm sorry, but you are mistaken. The Desire S can be bought on one of the post-paid contracts (Talk 100, I think) for R135pm, but that is not TopUp 135.

Read the PDF attachment in the Vodacom Deals thread. It clearly states the following: "HTC DESIRE S @ R 2989 CASH ON TOP UP, 135 (per minute billing only)".

Go to a vodacom store an pick up the magazine with all their specials , the desire S special on top up 135 is there, short of me going through my trash to find that book and scan the page checkout this link HTC Desire s Vodacom top up 135

Also take a stroll over to this thread:

Desire s low stock
or this one
Desire S vodacom deals

Please tell me how does that humble pie taste?

only downside stock is low :(

Even Ocleroux commented on those threads so if it was incorrect I sure he would have advised us, not to mention as i said above I Took out said contract for my wife

Damn. Okay, that is one crazy good special.

I'm going to call Vodacom tomorrow and see if they still have any stock available...

I got the HTC Desire S on mtn, just for the phone, and a side contract whose sim I won't be using.
Nice phone, bear in mind I'm moving up from a nokia 2700 :erm:

HTC Desire S hands down.

I know that the S2 has been coming down a lot lately, maybe you can find stock of an S2 and hopefully not have to pay in too much to get it. Stock might be a problem though.

If you can get the S2 then go for the S2, It'll be valid for years to come seeing that it's ICS upgradable.

Another option which I'm pretty sure is also one of your options is the SE Xperia PSP phone.

So is the Desire S officially by about July latest, and unofficially plenty have been upgraded with custom roms

Well, it wasn't for me, it was for a friend. But yeah, she placed an order for the Desire S, the local Vodacom outlet called three days later to say they had the phone, and she took the phone. She's extremely happy with the purchase.

I have to say, even I was somewhat jelly of the Desire S. I wouldn't trade anything in the world for my GNex, but compared to the Desire S's metal frame it really does feel somewhat frail and plasticky by comparison. As much as that pains me to admit...

HTC phones are awesome and they do feel like a solid, premium device, only downfall is the bloatware which can fixed. Although Sense is very pretty and functional.

Just don't get the ChaCha. It gets very hot when using it.

As far as I know, any phone will get hot, especially during heavy use of HSDPA & high screen brightness.

I suppose some phones will get hotter than others though.
