On a budget of about R2000 [including all cables, etc], what
is the best attenna that can be bought for use with a MyWireless
Modem?

You need to look at a couple factors

1) Why do you need a antenna? What is you current signal, and what do you want to achieve
2) Placement, Indoors, outdoors, In roof, on roof, on wall
3) How far is the required mounting place from your modem ( cable length )
4) Do you have obstructions looking towards the the tower or is it a clear air path ?

1) Signal not really great = 14%, would like to go as high as possible, 19% with a cantenna at present
2) In roof
3) max 10m
4) houses, hill

Dropping 2k on an antenna is not going to improve your speeds Slik. If you are suffering from excessive packet loss, then maybe the antenna is an option - I would recommend trying upgrading the modem firmware first though to see it improves latencies...

Yes, Cantenna is your best bet

I can tell you one of my modems is running off a R2000 antenna and signl is about 8% higher than with a cantenna(12% signal), but there is NO difference in speed between cantenna and antenna, no Ping difference either

Save yourself R2000 and stick with the cantenna

Now if you couldnt get signal where your computer is and needed the antenna on the otherside of the house then yes get one.

14% is great, got a number of friends on 8% or less with no problems

I agree with Wireless2 - at 14% signal, you are probably quite close to "as good as it gets"

To my usual signature below, I get about 10% signal strength from Linksfield

Hoping Bez Valley transmitter will be better when it gets built

Finished my 750g Ricoffy, cut a hole in it, stuck it to the modem; 3 lights and 42% BER! [:p]

Perhaps I should have added that the modem gets almost no signal on the ground floor, but when
you take it upstairs all is fine - problem is upstairs is a storage space and therefore not
suitable to work and the reason why I need an antenna - also I have to give the cantenna back
to its rightful owner.

Build yourself a cantenna. www.seattlewireless.net has tons of instructions. It'll cost you a pigtail, some cable, and some Frisco. Hell, if the modem is happy upstairs you might even consider the cheapie patch antennae from Nowire.co.za, just add some cable.

Another alternative, is to just get the Ethernet cable, put the modem upstairs, and run the ether downstairs. No need to spend megabucks. It won't do much for your pings or speeds.

Rodent - you know a lot about cantennas. Is a Pringles or Ricoffy best? I've never taken a Pringles up the roof or tried a Ricoffy tin on top of the Modem. The only thing my hand are good with is certain Body Parts :)

Seriously, I think you have made both- which gives the best results?

problem with leaving modem upstairs is that it is upstairs from the garage and a painful walk
to up and reset the modem when it is required - but hey I got the money, I want to spend it, just tell me where!

I bought the Andrew antenna for about R 800 and so far, it's been quite good...now with 18/19% signal to Mintek, BER of 57, SNL 0/1 (please someone explain these things ie high SNL is good or not and what is BER) Allthough the signal has been stable, download speeds still suck bigtime.

Not very scientific I know but anyone considering a Poynting Patch Antenna - DON'T

-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<

It depends what antenna model you bought!
Their entry level 12dbi model QD-2327 (R560) still underperforms
vs the Poynting 8dbi patch (R278).

About 3 months ago I was given a their QD2327 (2.3g - 2.7g) Patch antenna to test.
This is without a doubt the most useless antenna I have seen

As for SNL - The higher the better. In fact the SNL is probably more important than the signal strength in many cases.
