Hyundai i20 1.4 for R149 000 for sure. I've got one. It was between that and the Swift. You won't get a new Jazz/Fiesta/Mazda 2 for under R160 000... and who wants to deal with Ford anyway?

Even the Yaris T3 starts at R156 000.

we had a choice between the Swift 1.5 GLS and the i20 1.4 and settled for the i20. My wife LOVES the car and to think it's R10k cheaper than the Swift and both of them produce 74kw. The Ford / Mazda competitors are simply too expensive.
For just over 1K I even increased the service plan from 3 yrs to 5 :D

R150k for what is seen as entry level these days ... the sad part is people salaries are not increasing at the same rate these car prices are ...

for R150k instead of buying new why not get a slightly second hand car ... there are a few pretty nice late model cars that can be had for R150k ... just remember this market is f'ed ...

+1 on the 2nd hand option.

R150k can get you a whole lot of car if you look at 2-3 years old and under 100 000km.

You can even find something with much lower mileage if you shop around at that budget.

Or you can adjust it a bit, buy a 2nd hand car for R130k, and take the R20k extra to pay for your services in the coming years.

???? The 2006 RS model?

2007 new shape 1.5R

But ya, I agree with adam and the other guys who are saying look for a low mileage 1-2 year old car. No offense meant to the i20, but you can do much better for R150k on a good nearly new car.

I am probably looking at a newish second hand car, somethingwith around 20,000kms.

I have found a few Mazda 2s new for R150,000. I think this may be the one for me. I dont know that much about cars, but 2008 World Car of the Year sound good to me.

The Honda Civic Vtec hatch is the only thing holding me back for now. I have seen a few with around 60,000kms on the clock going for R150,000, and I have heard that it is an exceptionally good car.

Something made in SA usually means more likely to get stolen/hijacked, methinks.

Honda Civic sedan is the first new car I've had that's not yet given me any mechanical issues from new. I'd recommend it as it just feels reliable and timeless. And car mag still recommends it as best buy compared to others in its class.

Toyota Corrola, wont do you wrong.

Many manufacturer's have reached or exceeded Toyota's reliability and don't charge a premium for it.

Toyota didn't even make it to the top 5 in the latest survey on the UK's most reliable cars.
1. Honda Accord
2. Honda Jazz
3. Daihatsu Sirion
4 Hyundai i30
5. Ford Fiesta

While Toyota may still manufacture good vehicles I think they're over priced and under speced.
The cheapest Toyota Corolla is the 1.3 Professional for R177200 and the cheapest 1.6 goes for R193400.
The cheapest Yaris T3 is the 1.3 and it costs R152300 and doesn't even have electric windows or central locking!

And don't ask where VW ended up... it's embarrassing!

Hi Tinman

I've been driving a Mazda 2 Active for over a year now and I'm really pleased with the vehicle. It's been trouble-free and sips fuel, but more importantly it's really fun to drive and great to look at. The handling is superb and the brakes are fantastic. It comes highly recommended - buy it!

(Btw, I've seen demo 1.5s going for 145 grand. If you can stretch it would be nice to get the model up from my one for its long features list.)
