Hi Tinman

I've been driving a Mazda 2 Active for over a year now and I'm really pleased with the vehicle. It's been trouble-free and sips fuel, but more importantly it's really fun to drive and great to look at. The handling is superb and the brakes are fantastic. It comes highly recommended - buy it!

(Btw, I've seen demo 1.5s going for 145 grand. If you can stretch it would be nice to get the model up from my one for its long features list.)

Dave (1 post wonder) don't forget to leave your dealership contact details so I can throw some spam your way

Hehe okay I know it looks suspicious but I swear I have no offilliation with Mazda. lol. You'll see me around on other forums, don't worry.

If you want proof I'll tell you about the Mazda 2's faults...
- cheap dash plastic
- very little bootspace
- it's not exactly a rocketship
- it's now very overpriced on the new market. Get one second-hand.

Happy?

Oh, and the Ford Fiesta is also a good buy, which is based on the Mazda 2 but has better engines (except it has a funny 'grin' bumper at the front and costs more). Also, you'd do well with the new Honda Jazz or the good old Yaris T3, both decent cars for the money.

Of course it isn't a Ferrari (duh) but it's got a capable chassis and very chuckable handling, direct steering, etc. I'm comparing it to other cars below R150 000, not Ferraris lol. The Fiesta and Jazz are also great if you want a fun small car that costs less than 150 grand.

And to all the other suggestions, why buy second-hand? In SA our second-hand cars are so expensive! Rather stretch a little and get something new. Ag but if you want a V6 then fine. Just don't come crying to me when the petrol price goes up again :)

Im also contemplating between the gets i20 and the suzuki swift gls. I love my car, but its time I replace it now. too many things going wrong. The thought of paying it off though is making me feel a bit ill, but then with maintenance and warranty I dont have to worry about extra expenses during the payment.

The i20 got an safety rating of 5. however that is the one with 6 airbags and esp. The i20 here only has two airbags and I dont see ESP anywhere (have no idea what that is actually). How does that affect the rating? The suzuki swift one got 4 stars I think, busy looking for it now. Could someone please explain, im just a girl ;)

Removing airbags (i.e 2 instead of 6) will definitely have an effect on a car's overall safety. ESP is a kind of stability control system - it helps prevent you from losing control of the car during evasive action or over-enthusiastic driving. ESP and other systems like this play a bug part in active safety (active safety is all about preventing accidents from happening in the first place).

What's your budget?

I found this. http://www.euroncap.com/tests/hyundai/i20 .aspx . The i20 only got tested with the two airbags in the front, so its safety is quite impressive for a small car. The previous article I read about the i20 was incorrect. The suzuki has a 4 star rating.

My budget is R150k. I'll go and test drive both and then weigh up all my options. Sofar just on paper the i20 is winning. Lets hope I like it when I drive it.

Buying cars is like buying printers...

Don't look at the price tag of the car(printer) itself, rather look at the cost of ink (read: insurance / petrol consumption).

i think you can always get more car for your money if you buy something used... buying a new car is not always the best, there are reasonable bargains where the original owners have taken the 20% knock for you...

While I agree with you, buying an E36 328i or M3 is like buying a VR6. Most likely been driven fscked-up and you will cry if you have to repair the M3's engine...

Go for the i20 1.4. It is the best car if you are looking for new under R150K... I've had mine for over a month now. Otherwise, stretch the budget and get a Jazz.

Jeez guys, I picked up my Impreza for R129k with 19000km on the clock. There's amazing deals out there if you look a bit "outside the box."

Indeed, you can actually buy a pretty solid BMW [second hand] for R150k. You'll be surprised how much the value drops on these expensive cars.

Why does everyone fall for the "buy new" bulls#@t?
I almost bought the 1.6 i20 but at the last minute stumbled across a 2nd-hand Subaru Impreza. The Subaru cost 35k less, had better security, less insurance costs, waaaaaay better engine and handles like nothing else I've driven in.

The i20 is a great little car, but unless you are buying directly on a car allowance, buying new is retarded.

(scooby ftw)
