Hi All

I would like to find out different opions on which ADSL Modem/Router is bets suited for home use. I had the TP-LINK AC1200 Archer VR400 which got hit by lightning and now I need a new one (again). The TP-LINK was a nice modem/router, but like all the TP-LINKs I have had, I had to always reboot every day or so to get it reconnected to the ADSL line.

I currently have my CCTV linked to my modem and my Alarm system for off-site monitoring. (Helps alot as I have been able to stop a few break-ins).

My budget is around R1500.00 +/-. I have been reading where one can use a cheaper ADSL modem and connect a wi-fi router to it, does this work better?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I had good results with an external ADSL modem - the DLink 2500U in particular. I have since moved on to fibre, so am happy to part with my now unused 2500U's (primary and spare) if anyone wants them.

The main "obstacle" to using the separate ADSL modem is the difficulty in accessing the web UI on the modem, since in most cases, the main router will want to route everything down the PPPoE connection to the internet, rather than acknowledging that there is a reason to access addresses in the range issued by the DLS modem itself via the local ethernet port.

I personally used OpenWRT on my routers (not the 2500U), and set it up so that it was possible to access the modem. You may find it possible to just add a route on your main router, to get it to work.
