Planning an overseas business trip sometime next month, and I think it is time I get myself a credit card but the question is Which.

Can someone advise me on which credit card is best and which isn't, I've tried googling but no help - (ebucks for the win)

Thanks in advance

Capitec cards will give you the best exchange rate as they do not charge extra commission. You basically get the MasterCard rate for the day.

Plus with monthly fee of R50 and initiation fee of R100, sounds not so bad.

It really shouldn’t matter all that much.

Also don’t need a credit card. A decent internationally supported debit card will work just fine as well.

This.

Just use the VISA/Mastercard branded card with the bank you've always been with. If something goes wrong abroad you at least know your bank can help you. Not worth trying out new cards to save a few rand. I use my fnb cheque/debit card as well as fnb credit card.

Unfortunately I am a capitec bank user, so no Visa card.

What do you use for online purchases etc? They must surely issue VISA branded debit/credit cards as standard for any accounts?

I use my Virgin card when I'm in another country. The cash withdrawal fees are very low, and works fine otherwise. I also don't have a high credit limit on it, so basically just put in what I need. Just let them know that you will be out of the country.

That's fine works the same as VISA so no problem.

Pretty much universally accepted.

As long as Capitec allow international transactions.

It also depends where you are going. E.g.

Luanda, Angola: almost only Visa accepted.
Pemba Island, Zanzibar: only local cards (no international)

Granted, neither of these are too likely as destinations for your business trip; but it would be worth making sure the suggestions you are given here will actually work when you arrive.

@ International ATM withdrawal of R50.00, I wonder if one can do cash-backs when travelling abroad

Because of the above I'd recommend having both.

If your debit card is MasterCard, then get a Visa credit card and vice versa.

Just remember to phone your bank before you leave so that they can authorise international use: you'll need to specify all the countries you'll be travelling through and the dates of travel.

What I do to cover myself is to take a selection of cards and I've never had any issues before. Mastercard worked fine in the UK, Visa worked fine in Romania, Dubai and the United States. They're the two biggest card types, so your biggest problem will be having enough money on the card than finding a place to spend the money :D
