Best Deals for Dual SIM Phone

It seems to me that providers like Vodacom and MTN typically provide monthly cellular packages with voice and data bundled at higher prices than if they were purchased separately.

Is this assumption correct?
MTN's 3GB data bundle is priced at R330p/m (30 days)
MTN's Use Your Own SIM - My MTNChoice 25 = 25 minute SIM only contract = R39p/m x24

This equates to roughly R370p/m for 3GB and 25 minutes.

If so...I have a dual SIM phone and I'm considering getting a very simple voice only SIM card with about 30 minutes of airtime, and then getting another data only SIM from another provider with about 3GB per month.
If I look at Afrihost, it seems I can get
3GB for R145p/m
31 Minutes for R25p/m

This equates to roughly R170p/m for 3GB and 31 minutes.
...which is LESS THAN HALF of the aforementioned MTN bundle.

Is there a catch here?

Can anyone recommend a good value for money provider where I can get the aforementioned at the best price vs quality ratio?
PS. I would like to port my existing number over to the new provider

I went and got myself a 2GB topUp data contract from Vodacom and then just load R20-R30 pm on it for voice. Works perfect.

Bought the wife a dual SIM AG Chrome in March and ended going back to a single SIM in the phone as it was easier to manage. I tried both CellC and Afrihost in it and the signal strength by use is bad. Now I just buy her data but will also convert her contract to Data Top Up.

Thanks, I'll look into that... are there additional savings to be had with dual SIM setup?
Afrihost coverage should be fair, as they are likely using MTN network...

I just love the freedom of Dual SIM. Its nice knowing that we can use it even if we don't. Also the better cheaper phones all come in Dual SIM.

I've been on Prepaid for years now. Ported over to MTN a few months ago. Roll with AfriHost data as well (1 gig @ R59, increase it when I need to). Also put R30 or so airtime on when I run out.

Fortunately a single SIM phone works for me.

Does that mean that you can load airtime on an Afrihost data SIM?

I'm with MTN prepaid (so I have an MTN SIM), not AH. I saw a thread on the AH APN working with Prepaid SIM's a while back - before AH announced their voice plans. So I ported over to MTN and gave it a try.

I top up with normal MTN airtime.

I couldn't justify porting over to AH, I'd end up spending more for less. Until it stops working, I stay with them :p

Well all I did was sign up with AH Mobile Data (but you select the APN option, not the option to get a SIM). The sign-up process includes a section for you to pop in your Cell number (that you want the data on).

Once it's been provisioned, you get an SMS and / or Email.

After that, just setup the APN on your phone, and you're good to go.

Would this work on a Telkom SIM forced to MTN?

What about a Fnb data sim? Saw they had a 100mb for 30 odd rands a Month

Just got a dual sim myself, and trying to decide what to stick in the other slot,

Want only data, but something worthwhile, afrihost maybe?

That's a good deal!... Their 1GB package is R59 and bolt on is R99 = R148 for 2GB and permanent double topups.
Compared with their 2GB package which is R199 and no double topups.

R199pm on month to month for TM 5+5 gig data - that's anytime data + night data , no contract binds on sim only. ( I have 2.5+7.5 special for 99) they gave us a nice krissmass prezzie of 5 gigs free mobile data valid till the 30th, 7 to 7pm, ag dankie Telkom.

Have a look at sim sonke as well while you are at it, seems interesting for those going out their way to phone someone !
