It is important to choose the right device, however, as many of these set-top boxes may not support all the software you expect.

Have the Ematic myself and not nearly using it to what it can really do

That said, I'd consider the following must-haves:
Ethernet port
SD Slot (Kodi quickly filled the 8GB even though the media itself stays on an external HDD, don't want to format and lock the HDD exclusively to the TV box)
Bluetooth (Though all of them have it)
Extra USB ports are nice, but not required with a hub

Have the Ematic and I am happy (never tested any other though)
Sound and image performance is fantastic in my home setup. (1080p and Dolby Digital plus on Netflix)

I had a LIT box which I gave to a friend when I bought my smart TV. Went and bought a Ematic from Makro for my mother today, these cheap Android boxes are horrible. The price is also R1499 and not R1249

They just need to work on the remote control - the quality seems kinda mediocre and the text is starting to fade. Other than that, I truly love it - amazing how they can fit such a powerhouse in such a small little device. DSTV Now and Netflix are my things, love Youtube Premium as well on it

Some use a USB to Ethernet.
In my case, the constant HD/4K stream caused WiFi issues for other users
