So here I am watching the documentary "I am Celine" and got me thinking, vocally who would you rate os best vocalists of all time?

Me:
Freddie Mercury
Celine Dion

Honorable mentions:
Steve Perry
Whitney Houston

Edit: typed from phone, ignore spelling errors

I would go with Freddie Mercury and Whitney Houston, but all the names listed so far seem like good bets.

In terms of make vocalists was always a Freddie fan but I would rate Steve Perry a very close second.

Never seen two other male artists who could perform their songs live so welll that they would almost be indistinguishable from a studio recording.

Sarah Brightman also deserves a mention here.

How long is a piece of string.

Do we only consider women who can belt out the high notes, or is range also an option.

Celine is good. But Whitney and Mariah in recent history were as good if not better. Then going further back, we have alot of female vocalist who were as good, but due to limitations of time, they may not be as well known as the 3 above.

Male: I like reading, per many articles, I have seen the following:
Sinatra, Presley etc to name a few.

But since we in the woke era:

Step out of mainstream pop/rock and you'll find:
Dimash Kudaibergen and;
Diana Ankudinova

Leonard Cohen
Diana Krall
Everyone's answer will depend on the genre of music they mostly grew up with and/or usually listens to. I grew up with Freddy Mercury, Neil Diamond and Suzie Quattro etc., but pure artistry is found better in my preferred choices.

Best female vocalist in SA by far is Liezel Pieters. Check her out here at the start taking on Celine Dion and then again at the end. Ignore the Kurt Darrens in between lol

Of course a lot is very subjective. Depends on what type of music rocks your boat to a large extent.
Mercury and Ronnie James Dio for precision and reliability
Bruce Dickinson for power and oomph and amazingly wide vibrato
Early Steve Perry is indeed excellent.
So is early Geoff Tate- extremely good.

Surely Ariana Grande is in the conversation?

Well we have Belinda Davids who I once watch live, she is an entertainer and knows how to get a crowd going:

First link from searching her name:

Whitney Houston, Bill Withers, Marvin Gaye, MJ, Etta James, Luther Vandross, Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker.

Pick a couple from there and you’re in business.

I'm quite a fan of Filippa Giordano's Habanera but that's kind of a one trick pony so doesn't qualify.

I _can_ however tell you who the best brass player in the world is :) Gunhild Carling. She's insane.
