Best male and female vocalist of all time?

Kinda like asking who is the greatest male and female sportsman and sportswoman of all time.

Classical, pop, jazz, opera, all very different and incomparable genres.

But for 'mainstream popular music', Freddie Mercury and Nat King Cole, Barbara Streisand and Judith Durham come to mind.

best male? Panarotti
best female, need to get the name of one of the trance artists I listen to, never really check their name anyway.

Male: Freddie Mercury.

Female: Adele, and as @Speedster said, Ariana Grande. I always felt like she was a modern day Mariah Carey.

You guys might also appreciate this. Josh Weathers does an epic cover of I Will Always Love You:

Female - Swedish opera singer Anne Sofie von Otter. Her articulation is 100% in several languages

Male - Freddie Mercury had an astounding voice, so I'd say he is best

Whitney Houston, Bill Withers, Marvin Gaye, MJ, Etta James, Luther Vandross, Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker.

Pick a couple from there and you’re in business.
One name stands out among those. The singer was so good that people were so used to his vocals and never really paid attention. The vocals were outstanding, silky smooth yet powerful even during live singing.

Luther Vandross.

Reading through this again this morning, some very good artists here. As I look through this thread I remember a Greek singer who sang "My friend the wind". Just can't recall his name. Was also an amazingly gifted talent with massisve range. Off to go find his name quick

Edit: Demis Roussos
