Hi there,

I have a friend goin over to the UK and am hoping to ask them to bring a macbook pro back with 'em, ideally a 13inch. All the places i've checked online have them for £899,99. Do macbook prices vary much or is this the best I'm gonna get ?

Secondly, will it be pure luck as far as going through customs is concerned as to whether they check or not? ;) or should it be best to declare it and what are the vat implications?

Thanks,

D

Well the best price you are going to get is $999 much better to buy it in the USA the UK is very expensive. Many of my clients are buying them from Laptops Direct but buying int he USA you could save quite a few bob :D

If he unboxes it for you won't it then pass through and not count as a new purchase?

I've heard of someone who unboxed it, put on some personal data and then went thru something to declare and told them he brought it with him from SA. He didnt pay import duties on it. Depends on how good a liar your friend is I suppose :p

Got my 17" 2.8GHZ MBP from the USA at R21300 (a colleague went over)
Quite a bargain, but you take a risk though

I would be careful about this. I returned from a trip to the US and on my return custom flagged me and wanted to see proof of purchase. You are also supposed to have your laptop registered in your passport (I refuse to have my passport stamped with electronic details).

If it wasn't for me having my purchase slip on me, they would have taken my laptop and only returned if I produced proof-of-purchase or paid import duties.

I got a friend and his wife to bring me my macbook pro and my girlfriend's macbook from Oz. Customs didn't even ask about them. Also no problems with warranties here...

why don't you just get it locally?

from what I can find its about R3500 more expensive.

I plan to have it unboxed and my buddy has dual passports so if they say they are coming here on holiday, and show UK passport, that should work, he is also travelling with his really old granparents so might just put it in their bag.. :D still deciding tho'

the other question i had was, if you show proof of purchase in the UK, then wat does that mean for customs? u need to then pay import duties?

It seems computers & components are duty free - you only pay VAT. But this may only count up to R3000. At most you will pay VAT + 10%

That's kind of the problem. Apple products are still expensive in Europe and the UK. Now if you could get from the US store it would be worth it. $1200 is much less.

oky... so you pay 3500 less... but what if you need to exchange the product then you will have to send it all the way back to the u'k? SA factories won't repair stuff unless its local...

IMO I'd pay a bit more and then I'd know I can change it here in South-Africa.

Apple has an international warranty which Core should honour. As long as you have proof of payment/customs forms etc.

But seeing as it's not even any cheaper bringing it in from the UK, bit of a moot point.
