I got a network adapter and just waiting to get a harddrive and i already have hd advance
The hard drive is what makes the network adapter worthwhile. I use an official Sony drive (40GB) which I got with FFXI (NTSC version of the game so it doesn't work :( ). You don't need to use an official drive, compatible drives are cheaper, available locally and you can get one with far more disk space (e.g. Maxtor 300GB) :D

Whats Hardware Online ? Arena i've never heard of it
Hardware: Online Arena is an online tank-based shooter, it came with my network adapter. It's nothing amazing but it does allow for some quick, simple online fun and there are often around 30 players in an arena so it provides plenty of action.

The version that came with the network adapter connects to the paid Australian servers but you can connect to the free and far more active European servers by running a proxy server (e.g. CCProxy) on your PC and configuring Hardware: Online Arena's network setting to make use of it. To perform the actual redirect, you need to add the following two lines to your Windows 'hosts' file (%windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts):
Code:
217.18.19.42 hw2003-prod-muis.rt.au.playstation.com #Hardware Online Arena - Australia servers redirected to Europe
217.18.19.42 prbs22.rt.au.playstation.com #Hardware Online Arena - Australia servers redirected to Europe
SSX 3 is also quite fun to play online but the connection gets interrupted half the time. This tends to get a bit frustrating (especially to your European opponents) and it doesn't help your user rating.

Be aware that using a drive greater then 137GB requires a bit of extra effort to make use of the space above the 137GB mark (i.e. you need to install LBA48 drivers).

If you do end up getting a hard drive, it may be worth looking at the following two threads (amongst others):
i cant go online cause i have an old messiah mod chip that doesnt have the auto sleep function so i always get the red screen of death when trying to go online with my console
Not sure from which version it's supported from but you can can manually disable the messiah mod-chip by holding down the power button (when powering on) or holding down the eject button (when inserting a disk) until the blue light comes on. It's still possible to play games online with the mod-chip enabled but this may depend on the game as well as weather or not you're using an original disk.

Midnight Run 2, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 & Socom were all also playable :D

Thanks for the reminder, developments seems to have improved significantly since I last viewed the site

Ah, the big debate of Xbox 360 vs PS3. One of my main justifications for purchasing the PS2 was it that it cost around the same price as most DVD players at the time, I think I'll be employing the same logic again as the PS3 will be cheaper then any Blu-Ray player (for now at least). Another major deciding factor is the fact that "God of War" will not be released for the Xbox 360.

There used to be a "Live CD" version of "PS2 Linux" floating around which as far as I'm aware removed the need for the network adapter and hard drive.
Interesting, that wouldn't leave much RAM for running Linux, my guess is you'd loose about 5MB for the Kernel, 10MB for a ram disk and be left with 18MB free. If you find the Live CD, please let us know, I would like to see how it was done.

Out of interest what are you planning on using PS2 Linux for?
I thought it would be a good way to learn a bit of Linux, when I've tried on i386 hardware its too easy to boot into DOS or Windows if you get stuck.

One of the hacks for it allows you to backup & restore saved games to and from the hard drive but unfortunately that hack doesn't work when using the hack that allows PS2 Linux to run on the same drive as HD Advance.
Are you referring to the patch for the memory card driver that enables you to access directories other than BWLINUX and the patch that enables APA partition support? If so, there's a kernel you can download here: http://playstation2-linux.com/projects/apa/ that includes both patches.

Take note that this kernel is built on the newer APA partition code that makes it compatible with the Japanese BBNavigator, so if you have partitions created by the older APA partition code from PS2 Linux 1.0 Beta you will need to backup your data, delete your Linux partitions and create them again. You don't need to touch your game partitions though.

It is good to see other PS2 "hackers" here!
