So, that means that Toyota sold 13.38 x as many 'Starlets', when compared to the Suzuki Baleno - for what is essentially the EXACT SAME car, only with different badges on it - AND the Baleno is substantially cheaper than the equivalent Starlet (which does however also have an mid-spec XS (rental fleet) model as well, that slots in just above their base-level Xi variant & the higher trim XR model).

This is even though Suzuki offers a MUCH longer warranty period - 5 yrs / 200,000 km as opposed to Toyota's 3 yrs / 100,000 km - and the better service plan as well - 4 yrs / 60,000 kms, compared to the Toyota's 3 yrs / 45,000 km offering.

Go figure...

Vehicle prices way out of line. 250k for entry level is just not right, to manufacture it most likely under 100K. The crazy thing is, if you want a fancy car its cost as much as a house now..

For 250k you can purchase a decent second hand SUV.

For reference I got a 1 year old Ford FIesta in 2017 for R170K. A new Fiesta today would cost you between R320k and R350k

I'm looking for one. Seriously.

Got a suggestion? I've been having a tough time finding something decent.
I'm looking for one too.

I've been contemplating between spending 250k - 350k in terms of the year/mileage/brand. The Fortuner is high on my list.

Car price increase is mostly due to the steel price having doubled in the last two years.

Yes, some of it is due to the subsidy of government to arcelormittal, but mostly due to the worldwide steel shortage.

chip shortage not playing a part?
or are the taxes and import duties not playing a role as well?

Toyota could sell you a car with 1980s tech for over R650k and people would still buy them in their boatloads. ... oh wait ... they do. LC79

I often see these specials from Toyota but never from Suzuki. Could also be onr of the factors why they sell well.
