I have done it telephonically, but be sure to get a reference number. Several months after the contract terminated I received a call from them wanting money for subscriptions after the termination date. I gave them the reference number and never heard from them again.

My call to 808 did not go well……
On the MTN website the question “ How to cancel your contract?” is answered as follows:
“If you wish to cancel your contract, you need to give MTN Service Provider at least 30 days notice. Your contract does not automatically terminate after 24 months - you need to inform MTN Service Provider of your intention to cancel. If this notification is not received, your contract will continue to run on a month-to-month basis until you decide to either upgrade or terminate. Early termination requests are possible but you will be liable for the remaining subscription for the full contract, as well as a fee for the phone. MTN Service Provider determines the fee and is dependant on the age of the contract at the time that the cancellation request is received.
Call the Customer Care Helpline and use One Key Question.”

It clearly states that you have to notify them 30 days prior to the date that you want to cancel. My contract expires on the 07/03/2013.The 808 egg-head that eventually tried to assist me informed me that I had to phone on the 06/03/2013 when I said “you mean the 06/02/2013” her reply was “ NO! I know how this works! By this time I totally lost it. I Will try again by going to their main branch in person….whish me luck.

Call 808 and ask them to put you through to retentions. Then ask them for the settlement figure and they will ask you to settle with payment and your cellphone number as a reference. Be sure to mail them with proof of payment and they will cancel in 3 days or so.

They will ask if you want to keep your number or delete it and that's it.

Did this on two occasions and had no problems.

There is no easy difficulty in regards to this:

Levels are:
!
!!
!!!

Difficulty level will be chosen for you at random, don't use the fax for any reason, the proof of notification of cancellation is unlikely to help you, there is no such thing as evidence when dealing with them, if you do end up in court though...

Be strong

If your contract expires on the 7th of March ...

Call them on the 6th of March and port the number to prepaid. This is to avoid getting the new monthly fee added.

You will get one last bill with calls from the previous month that was more than your bill.

Make sure you cancel the day before the billing cycle.
You will lose all unused data and call value.

Then either use the number on prepaid or port it unless you do not want the number anymore.
Easiest way to cancel a contract. Else yes, you need to contact them on 6 Feb, which has come and gone.

Did this recently.

I am with Vodacom but maybe it works the same way.

My upgrade is 18 Feb and contract renewal is 31 March.
I called them on Monday and told them I wanted to change to prepaid. They loaded it on the system and said my contract will automatically convert to prepaid on 1 April.

Whether it happens or not is a different story. But was fairly easy getting the change loaded on the system.

On 1 April I will port.

@Mike

With that number that I did the above...

I called them a week before the last monthly cycle. They said that if I placed a prepaid request on the notice day(30 before) then the number would get changed immediately and I would still be billed for the month.

So I guess MTN and VC run things differently.
