The only SA artists I could recommend in JHB/PTA from what I have seen here and there from many studios is Rasty Knayles from 1933 Classic tattoos, Fallen heroes in PTA or Liquid Liquorice Tattoo. I currently tattoo in Germany, all I can say is please be careful with who you go to, I am not the type of artist that will go around to talk crap about others, but all I can advise is do your homework, I see mess ups on a day to day basis, this unfortunately isn't always the customers fault unless they looking to just get a bargain then ya it is their fault, "cheap tattoos aren't nice, nice tattoos aren't cheap", so I try to educate who ever I can when possible.

Ask for their portfolio, have a look at their work, ask to see cover ups they have done before etc. so you can judge for yourself, and then ofcourse there is hygiene which is really important, new needles, steralised grips etc. But I am pretty sure the shops I have recommended to you now do all that.

And important, listen to the artist, don't try to act like a smart ass, listen to what advice he has to give, be open to suggestions, take as much reference of things you like to help give him a better idea of what's in your head, if an artist says something is not a good idea or it won't work well, don't argue with him to say he should try, just listen, it will be for your own benefit, if these studios are as professional as what I think they are to be they should offer you good advice, I have never met them or been to their studios, I am only judging on some of the work I have seen, I left the tattoo scene in South Africa unfortunately because we are quite way behind, but things are starting to progress alot quicker now in the tattoo scene from what I see on Facebook every now and then.

To reiterate on this: Rasty is amazing, expect a 6 month wait minimum. So is Thys Uys from Fallen Heroes, expect an 8 month wait minimum.

If there is so long a waiting list, they must surely make A LOT of money.

If I had clients queuing for 8 months I'll charge the same fees as corporate lawyers and appeal court advocates.
