Thanks for all the input. It is much appreciated.

How is the internet (fixed line) in other small towns like George, Knysna, etc?
At least the 3G coverage seems ok, but I suppose congestion over holiday periods will make 3G worthless?
Certain parts of George has excellent ADSL
George CBD - 1 Gb/s backhaul at 200Mb/s capacity (10 Mb/s speeds)
Mossel Bay CBD (10 Mb/s speeds), I believe Oudtshoorn is next.
LoeriePark (044-871) - 155 Mb/s backhaul (All others at 4 Mb/s)
Vicbay (044-889) some users have complained about congestion (speedtests have been approx 2-2.5Mb/s on 4 Mb/s circuit)
Kraaibosch (044-887) Garden Route Mall - poor performance due to serious backhaul issue, which will be addressed when they get Metro Ethernet (approx 1.8 Mb/s if you are lucky)
Wilderness (044-877) hear complaints from various users about poor performance, never personally tested.

Vodacom has excellent speed at the Garden Route Mall (10 Mb/s), Glentanna (5 Mb/s), Storms River (5 Mb/s)
Areas such as Wilderness Heights, Hoekwill, Wilderness have poor VC & MTN data

Cell C is installing new base stations at Wilderness Heights, Herold's Bay and Blanco
8ta have installed new base stations at the Garden Route Mall.

Various WiSP have Neotel & Telkom SAIX fiber backhaul and offer speeds from 384kb/s to 10 Mb/s

According to Ookla:

Hong Kong Central District – 45.93Mbps
Vilnius, Lithuania – 41.41Mbps
Bucharest, Romania – 35.58Mbps
Singapore, Singapore – 35.47Mbps
Taipei, Taiwan – 34.57Mbps
Seoul, South Korea – 34.50Mbps
Constanta, Romania – 34.16Mbps
Iasi, Romania – 33.95 Mbps
Tokyo, Japan – 33.37Mbps
Sofia, Bulgaria – 32.83 Mbps

I will pick Vilnius, Lithuania....
The girls are so nice that I will have no time to use the internet at all!

@Fulcrum29, I agree with you regarding Gordon's Bay, but don't agree with you regarding Strand.

From what we've been able to gather from our contacts in Telkom - being wholesale clients and all that... - we understand there's no direct cable between the main Somerset West exchange and Strand. It seems that the cable runs along the N2, to Gordon's Bay and then doubles back to the Strand Exchange. They are running fibre down Main Rd from Somerset West to Strand. Hopefully for ADSL users, the Strand ADSL problems will be solved once that connection is in place. We are eagerly awaiting it, as we have an order in for a Metro Clear between our NOC in Somerset West and our big wireless POP in Strand.

Telkom can give us Metro Clear in Sir Lowry's Pass, but not at Old Cape Mall in Gordon's Bay.

Areas in Somerset West where we have no clients due to ADSL doing what it's supposed to do are:

La Concorde / Monte Sereno / Parel Vallei.
Heldervue / Braeview / Steynsrust / La Montagne.

In the other suburbs, there's a reason why so many houses have antenna on their roofs...

There are a handful of other locations, where if you are really lucky, you will decent ADSL, but that doesn't solve the problem of the Tikkoppe and their love of copper cable.

@Nod, do you want to buy or rent? What's your budget?

I know this is a very old thread...Just trying to find out how the internet is these days in Somerset West?

My adsl was unstable, so is on wireless now. Not too bad R399 for 4Mb uncapped (shaped and softcapped after 200Gb/month).

Which town outside of Cape Town have the best, or at least most stable internet (ADSL) connection?
I was thinking of Paarl, but I'm not too sure.
Any other recommendations from people living outside of Cape Town?
I require a stable connection for work purposes.

I have Telkom LTE in Stellenbosch andget very fast speeds 40mb/s. Vodacom is also going to put in here soon, PM me for details

Mine has been stable. 10mb line using a 4mbs uncapped Telkom account with a 6mbs uncapped FNB as backup. Get full speed on NNTP and torrents and no issues on streaming. Don't game. In Bridgewater, Somerset West.

Clean wireless spectrum is a problem on all bands, even licenced.

This is a speedtest now from my home.

I have one wireless hop, then straight into our fibre infrastructure. There's something near me causing interference.
