That's 56kW standard. I'm not sure why you automatically assume I'm wrong, yet don't bother to check before accusing me of lying. I mean, we're not in the pub bragging about our cars here are we, so why would I lie about it? :)

For the record, Datsun claimed 70kW for the motor at the time, but in those days they often made claims running a bare motor, and running it to destruction. It was a damn fine motor, pity the body was made out of rusted tinfoil.

I agree that 55kW is pretty impressive for a N/A 1.0l motor, but I still don't think it's enough for a car these days.

Jeez, relax.

I didn't say you were wrong or lying, just that I doubted it and therefore left it to you to prove otherwise.

I am impressed with the figures, but surely you can agree that isn't/wasn't the norm? How reliable was that motor for instance? How economical?

Yeah, sorry, a bit of a knee jerk reaction there. I'm relaxed now - it's beer o'clock :)

The motors were reliable, the design was a direct copy of the Mercedes Benz 2l straight four, and the smaller ones were scaled down a bit. I drove it like I stole it for about eight years. Used to rev it till it hit valve bounce at about 7500rpm (when I sold it , it would only do about 6500). Used to chew through clutches (probably my driving style at the time), and the gearbox fell apart, but the engine was rock solid. The 140z which had twin side draft webers used to give the 3l Cortinas a run for their money.

Economy was average for the day, but really poor by today's standards. It used to rev at about 4000rpm at 120 (4 speed box). You could count on around 10 l/100km, maybe a bit less at 100 on the open road.

Yeah so all things considered getting the same from a 1l with half the fuel usage doesn't seem all that bad.

I drove a Corsa with 55kw not so long ago and it was more than enough. Even 12 years old I would have that over the Chev Spark rental I had to use recently.

But it only weighs ±900kg?

What do you mean dude? Of course 55kw is more than enough for car in this sector/price range.

Then we can additionally take into account the power/weight ratio of this relatively light (light) compact car.

For its purpose; carting ppl A to B; it could make do with a lot less than 55kw & still be fine.

And that's not even before I get into the "perception of speed" concept

I agree. Just think it's a bit too little for a fun ride. I'd be happier if they stuck a slightly bigger motor in or a turbo. Just my personal preference.

I don't think this is meant to be a fun ride.

It's meant to be economical which is also why there is no turbo as it adds cost.

It's a small city car meant to take kids to school or do short and cheap trips to work.
