Beware downloading pirated movies during lockdown

Microsoft has warned users of a significant increase in malware and ransomware embedded into illegal downloads of movies and other media.

With the global COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown in place across many countries, there has been a significant increase in Internet traffic, including the use of pirate streaming services.

Just run Linux and you can pirate all day ...
This is not strictly true. "Running Linux" doesn't mean immunity. There are security problems, known and unknown, with Linux which can be exploited.

Historically it's not common to have Linux on the desktop so malware writers haven't really bothered targeting it. That's changing with Linux's dominance on cloud services, and they make for attractive targets, so Linux malware is starting to very much become a thing.

@Jamie McKane - this title is a bit misleading. Lockdown really doesn't have much to do with it. I call clickbait.

Just call them internet hogs and complain how you dont understand them downloading 2TB of data as you...a simple user.....only require 10MB of data for an entire month.

True, but it is much easier to lockdown (haha) a linux box and limit what can run via root access (malware included).

It's been a thing for years.
Think Android.
That Linux based OS is riddled with nasty malware.

Seriously? This sheite again?

My religion reveres pirates, in fact our profit asserts that the decline in the number of pirates over the years is the cause of global warming..

Do you really want the planet to cook?

Actually lockdown has everything to do with it. More people at home with time on their hands worldwide including bad actors. Pardon the pun.

How does streaming equate to downloading? Was this a "in partnership with" article?

Though yes the majority of "free streaming" sites including kissanime are filled to the brim with malware of some kind..... whenever one in the past said "please disable your adblocker" I was like "....... heeeel no". Which was exceptionally funny when I did temporarily disable my adblocker but not my miner-blocker in AV and it still complained..... which means it was not actually complaining about my adblocker.....

It pays to be paranoid on the internet, if it's "free" it has STD's..... just like loose woman of any other kind.

Good for you. You probably don't work from home as 10Mb will not last me an hour for emails. Then there is still constant meetings on Microsoft Teams.

Perhaps that is why most people pay more for an uncapped product.

Huh?

I am sitting with 2.5TB for last month. Where did I say I downloaded 10MB?

PiHole with Cloudflare 1.1.1.3 malware and Porn block as upstream DNS provider, that together with the minimum 1 brain cell i've assigned to common sense continue to keep me safe.

What utter BS...as usual.

Over the years I've downloaded approx 7TB of stuff. And never have I downloaded any malware or viruses...
