Beware fake news and scams on WhatsApp

WhatsApp is far more than just a messaging app for South Africans - it is often a vehicle for breaking news and community gossip.

The app's provision of fast and secure communication can be extremely useful when sharing important information, but it can also help to spread more nefarious messages.

I understand falling for hoaxes on FB where it's a free for all but if you're in WA groups with people sprouting all manner of misinformation, it's time to boot them out or leave the group.

Not so easy when the whatsapp group concerns the building you live in. I just post the correct information after someone has posted garbage.

True. That's the other way, punish the misinformed by making them look stupid.
