Hi All

Just a note of my experience with Blackberry Internet Service. If your BIS goes down and you are browsing on your phone, you will be charged at normal data rates. I've requested for Cell C to remove my internet APN as I don't want to see extra charges on my account but they say it can't be done. If this is the case, how am I supposed to know that I am getting billed at normal data rates especially because BIS is never on for a complete 24 hour period in Brackenfell.

Stay away, I unfortunately have 2 Cell C blackberry packages and it just proves that cheap isn't always better.

That is all.

What is your APN settings on your phone?

blackberry.net

The Cell C response was: This is not possible, the Blackberry APN works together with the internet APN because the internet APN gives GPRS access.

When I queried something similar to this for my wife (she has an 8520 on MTN), they said that if the word 'edge' was in uppercase it was on BIS. And conversely, if it is lowercase, it's not. So, 'EDGE' = BIS, 'edge' = not BIS. Not sure if that applies across the board, or if he was telling call centre fibby fibs.

@MightyP - if you are using a data application, and BIS goes down, it will connect via the standard APN and you will get billed.

@BOYAH

9300 has OS6
8520 has OS5

The only workaround that I could found was to delete the WAP2 Transport Service book which stops WAP APN browsing, but every time your phone is switched off, the service book re appears. I'm not sure if this stops applications using the standard APN but I'm not willing to try.

The end result, I want to be able to download a 20MB file, and not be worried that I might get billed extra for this.

Surely this is a general problem with Blackberry, no matter which operator you are with?

I disagree.we just did a test with 2 blackberrys - 1 on cell c,1 with vodacom.we googled nicholas cage and the vodacom blackberry loaded search results quicker.

My ultimate goal is to disable the internet apn on cell c,something which vodacom can do

Hi All

Just an update, Cell_C did look into it and confirmed that Cell C can not remove the WAP APN and let you use BIS only.

Vodacom does offer this. In the mean time, removing the WAP2 Service Book seems like the only workaround at the moment.
