Beware of these common cryptocurrency scams

More realistic scams:

Cloud mining
Giving money/ bitcoin to "traders" who promise returns
Bitcoin doublers, "blockchain hackers" etc

One of the bigger scams - links already shared on this forum - is the mining hardware scam. $4k for hardware that doesn't exist.

If you are knowledgeable about blockchain technology, reading the project’s whitepaper can shed light on whether the ICO is to fund a working prototype, or is just hot air.
It's near impossible to filter out bunk ICO's. The lack of regulation means anyone with a flashy website and a well-written whitepaper can attract a decent chunk of investment. A scammer is able to write nearly as legitimate a whitepaper as a legit ICO.

Use wallets from reputable providers and preferably ones which do not store your private key – and are therefore unable to access your funds.
Lazy writing.
You could point out that the user needs to hold their keys in the event that the wallet service stops functioning. Maybe give a quick example of what a key is. And you're only unable to access your funds if things go wrong - a provider which holds your key doesn't mean you can't access your funds. Luno holds your keys and we all access our funds just fine.
