Beware swiping your card at these hotspots

Card skimming has become a serious problem in South Africa, with an increasing number of locals falling victim to this type of fraud.

This type of crime refers to the cloning of payment card details and the recording of the victim’s PIN through the installation of concealed hardware on ATMs or point-of-sale machines.

WTF? I came looking for a list. All you BS article says is
high instances of POS card skimming in Gauteng, the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga,”
and
this type of crime occurs more often in areas where high volumes of payments are processed, such as petrol stations, bars, restaurants, grocery stores, and ATMs.
.

****ing troll post of note.

That's why you tap and go, but most places dont train their staff that they need to present the machine to the customer and let them tap.

Plenty of people have a stick up their arse about Tap and Go/RFID tech.

Lot of staff seem reluctant to do it because they get shouted at by certain small minded Boomers that think that tap and go is the anti christ and mag strips are perfectly fine:rolleyes:

The reality is that with a mag strip cloning is very easy and your card can be used anywhere. With RFID similar to chip and Pin it is not so easy because of encryption.
The second point would be that someone would tap a card machine against your pocket. First of all they need to be a registered merchant so that already is a headache because eventually after a couple of fraudulently banked card transactions they are gonna be coming after them.

How do they skim & clone the chip on the card?
Not a consumer problem - the card company is liable for skim fraud.

The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC) has repeatedly warned South African banking customers to be wary when using ATMs and making card payments, as it can be very difficult to tell if these devices have a skimmer installed.

Then ask your members to roll out Tap and Pin to all ATMs and Tap and whatever to all POS terminals ASAP for those of us who do not have Tapaphobia

Tap n Pin ATM's. I prefer the call for biometrics at ATM's. Can't wait for the criminals to hack your hand off when they skim your card or steal your wallet.

Moral of the story... DO not swipe your card in Gauteng, the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga. Cash is king :cautious:
