Beware the web domain scheme

I have had a few similar calls for different companies I am envolved with. The simple solution is just to go and register the domains yourself for $10 instead of paying their fees. It so quick you can do it while they are still talking to you on the phone. I would rather spend the $10 than possibly have the name gone and need it later.

They try to deal directly with CEO's and if you try and pass it onto IT they get upset and refuse to talk further.

I got a call on Monday...

Woman told me that someone wanted to register 3 versions of the company name as .net, .com and .info for 10 years  . After i told her that we only do our registrations locally, she got really shirty and put the phone down.

I explained here last week how somebody did the same to my Fathers company while I was away on Honeymoon.. Unfortunatly he fell for it.

Of course they never charged him the £600.00 for each domain, but they charged him R600.00 for two domains, One, .co.za the other .com. The company's web address is www.baypointtrading.co.za

I haven't done anything about it yet, but they have set themselves up as the Billing, Admin, and Technical Contacts.. Though I blame my Father for being an idiot and not checking up with somebody first

Hehe, that sounds like fun thing to do, actually! ;)

“I don’t think they’re breaking any laws,” says Calvin Brown, financial director of Uniform, a South African internet domain registrar. “But they’re certainly not the most ethical group of people.”
How could misrepresenting yourself as an "accredited member" or "accredited registrar" of a non-existant society not be a crime? And to say that someone will register a domain using your business' name if you don't pay them to register it is extortion and if they are lying it is fraud. There are always a few charges to slap on someone.

Just had a call from a representative of Horizon Interweb. Also "alerting" me to someone who is trying to cause my company possible harm by registering 6 domains similar to that our web domain.

The whole story sounded a bit fishy, and the 600pounds mentioned sounded steep, so I decided to do an Internet Search.

The Moneyweb article on MyADSL showed up in Google, and brought me here.
