Beware thieves targeting outdoor alarm beams - Fidelity

Fidelity ADT has warned clients of a new favourite target for theft - outdoor beams for alarm systems.

"Criminals often target outdoor detection beams, not only to make it easier for them to break into your home later but also as a means to sell them for some extra cash," Fidelity ADT district manager for Pretoria Leon Muller said.

"Criminals know that a lot of homeowners do not activate their outdoor beams when they are home. This makes them easy pickings."

I am on our area neighbourhood watch and this happens a lot on a Saturday morning - in daylight.

We will have to put them in a metal cage, just like we do with gate motors!

Why would you not put your beams on when you're home?

Hell, in my house, the last person to go to bed knows to activate the alarm in "Stay" mode.

During the day though ? when you are at home ?

My outdoor passives are terrible and I got a quote to replace them at R2k each ! FFS
Was cheaper and less disruptive to just have beams.

I can see why you would steal them though. At that price you clean them up and then some installer will sell them back to the poor owner.

Yes my 1 beam is in excess of R6k thus far. I'm still looking at what security to put in place to protect the one I am currently working on....
