This is probably the 6th time a similar article has come up. What has changed?

This would be ideal for Durban .
The Umbilo canal is rite next to a major sub station in Rossburgh that leads in to the harbor .
If heads were removed from ass a power ship could be connected within 3 months , actual work would take about a month .

Nice idea, but noise might be a issue?
Not sure, but a huge generator makes a racket next to a residential area.....

IIRC the last time this was addressed it hit a snag because urgent legislation still stranded on our illustrious President's desk after a year and a half to free up the generation of electricity had yet to be passed, which means that it is still illegal for private companies to generate electricity in competition with our State Monopoly supplier.

I'm guessing that the difference is this time, that the ships would supply through Eskom rather than into a free market.

We had a power barge hooked up in Cape Town in 2006 as stated in the article. Infrastructure is still there, would be even less effort than doing it in Durban.

"Eiiish, da shiip can geev as powa?! , aaikona wena " ... Minister of Energy

But in all seriousness, this govt. do not have the money to buy toilet paper, nevermind these ships (unfortunately the ANC don't seem to realise this). Nevermind the bit about basically driving Sasol out of this country, so who exactly is going to supply the gas these ships need and more important who is going to operate and MAINTAIN them ?

According to the report the Karadeniz Energy Group said that Eskom can save billion by switching to electricity produced by its Powerships.

Is it billions or a billion :)
